NY: The Beach Hotel Season Is Almost Here as Sunset Beach and Surf Lodge Announce Opening Dates

So, what's happening hotel-wise at New York-region beaches? Andre Balazs's <a href="http://www.hotelchatter.com/hotel-reviews/Sunset+Beach+Hotel/local/342">Sunset Beach Hotel</a> opens for the season on Shelter Island on May 14. Weekend rates start at $420 a night, and Mid Week rates from $225 a night. Just remember that "weekend" means Thursday through Sunday. And like most beach properties, Sunset Beach requires a three-night minimum for holiday weekends. But there are two things you should know before we continue: number one, Andre Balazs has a property on Long Island (Shelter Island, actually). Number two: not many of us are aware of this because, as we like to say, it's kinda <a href="http://www.hotelchatter.com/story/2007/3/7/154448/7227/hotels/Andr_Balazs_Dark_Hotel_Secret">his deep, dark secret</a>. Last we <a href="http://www.hotelchatter.com/story/2007/3/7/154448/7227/hotels/Andr_Balazs_Dark_Hotel_Secret">checked</a>, we had some outdated rooms, dirty linens, and decidely un-Balazs-y decor. But who knows: that was two seasons ago in '07, and maybe the place has been spiffed up since then. Our point here is that the place with its 20 rooms will open up on Friday,

January sure is turning out to be quite the hot month for Andr� Balazs and his Standard Hotel chain. After successfully soft-opening his New York property while continually making the social rounds, Andr� has turned himself over to the design and culture arbiters of Arkitip Magazine.

The 50th issue of Arkitip, due out in mid-February, will "focus on the creative side of [Andr�'s] work, paying attention to the way he 'pays attention' to details, his inspirations, as well as some of his obsessions." And if we're to infer anything from the above pose of Andr� on the table, then this could be juicy.

We're pleased to hear that the hotel's food is to die for -- a <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601088&sid=aCrkXIa.Izis&refer=muse">rave review</a> of the Sunset Beach menu recommends the bouillabaisse and the moule frites, two classic French dishes, bien sur.  The writer notes, "With a little help from the Frenchies at the next table, you could almost make believe you're in St. Tropez admiring the Mediterranean." Interestingly, the writer failed to mention the hotelier's <a href="http://www.hotelchatter.com/story/2008/5/24/123630/542/hotels/Andre_Balazs_Dark_Secret_Wine">Reserve Sunset Beach Rose</a>. Damn, that's a lot of accents.<blockquote>The grapes are grown near Balazs Sunset Beach Hotel on Shelter Island and processed by Wolffer Estate of Sagaponack.
