NY: The Beach Hotel Season Is Almost Here as Sunset Beach and Surf Lodge Announce Opening Dates

Could it be ... sunshine? Oh, Hallelujah, the sun is out! We know it's Passover and Easter and all that, but onto more pressing matters: Booking summer vacations at the beach.
So, what's happening hotel-wise at New York-region beaches?
Andre Balazs's Sunset Beach Hotel opens for the season on Shelter Island on May 14. Weekend rates start at $420 a night, and Mid Week rates from $225 a night. Just remember that "weekend" means Thursday through Sunday. And like most beach properties, Sunset Beach requires a three-night minimum for holiday weekends. If you want to see Courtney Love in a bikini, this could be the beach

Shelter Island: Andre B.'s Sunset Beach Opens For the Season on May 15th

Number two: not many of us are aware of this because, as we like to say, it's kinda his deep, dark secret. Last we checked, we had some outdated rooms, dirty linens, and decidely un-Balazs-y decor.
But who knows: that was two seasons ago in '07, and maybe the place has been spiffed up since then.
Our point here is that the place — with its 20 rooms — will open up on Friday,

André just we way we like him. Grrr
January sure is turning out to be quite the hot month for André Balazs and his Standard Hotel chain. After successfully soft-opening his New York property while continually making the social rounds, André has turned himself over to the design and culture arbiters of Arkitip Magazine.
The 50th issue of Arkitip, due out in mid-February, will "focus on the creative side of [André's] work, paying attention to the way he 'pays attention' to details, his inspirations, as well as some of his obsessions." And if we're to infer anything from the above pose of André on the table, then this could be juicy.

Damn, that's a lot of accents.

The grapes are grown near Balazs Sunset Beach Hotel on Shelter Island and processed by Wolffer Estate of Sagaponack. It's a blend of merlot, cabernet, sauvignon, cabernet franc and cahrdonally and Balazs argues that it can challenge any california vino.

Apparently South Fork is the new Napa Valley for Balazs. The bottle will cost somewhere between $40 to $50 and a wine expert sought out by NY Mag said it has whiffs of strawberries
