East Melbourne: The Park Hyatt Has Another Hotel Down Under in Melbourne

We didn't know this but there's another Park Hyatt in Australia--The Park Hyatt Melbourne.
Lonely Planet describes Melbourne as an "avant-garde haven" where residents are "equally passionate about football and ballet, fashion and restaurants." It sounds like a perfect location for the uppity and expensive Park Hyatt brand.
The hotel is located on the banks of the city's Yarra River. It has 240 rooms, all of which look enormous although we're a little disappointed with the decor which really just looks like high-end manufactured Hyatt room furniture. There are no personal touches here but we bet you will like the deep-sunken tubs in each bathroom complete with TVs.

It has just been sold to a private Japanese investor for a record price for the Australian market.

The final price for this posh hotel was A$201.6 million (almost US$190 million), which works out at almost US$1.2 million per room, the highest per-room price ever paid for a hotel in Australia. We're glad the per night rates translate to being a bit cheaper (although at around $730 a night, we probably shouldn't use the word cheap).

No word yet on whether the new owner has plans for any alterations--though since it's running pretty successfully at the moment, we'd tend to adopt the "if

This week the Park Hyatt Sydney hit the headlines Down Under not so much because guests can't find a spot for their cars, but because a whole floor of the car park has been carefully hidden away for allegedly more important people.

Yes, the furor is that the state government has cordoned off an entire floor of the Park Hyatt's underground car park for the exclusive use of its employees.
Apparently it's just too much trouble for the senior public servants to struggle with Sydney's public transport system like normal people do,

We are suckers for a room with a killer view. We find that we are even more likely to forgive some minor hotel inconveniences if we can stare out the window at something pretty--yeah we are that shallow. Let's help out our fellow hotel mavens by uploading rooms with killer views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. However, we interrupt your regularly scheduled programming here to fill you in on some celeb scoop while we were checking out of the Park Hyatt Sydney.
We checked out on Saturday, February 17th and headed over to the Observatory Hotel (full report to come later today). But even after settling in our near hotel, we sort of missed hanging around the Rocks area so we headed back near the Park Hyatt to eat and shop at the weekly Rocks market which happens to be next to a Holiday
