Los Angeles: Video Exhibit at L.A.'s Standard Hotels Anything But Standard

For the next six months, guests and passersby at the Standard Hotel’s two L.A. properties will be treated to a video art show by artist and Guggenheim fellow Kalup Linzy, whose works have also appeared at New York’s MoMa, and the Whitney.

Entitled Key to Our Heart and SweetBerry Sonnet, Linzy’s works are meant to raise questions about gender, sexuality, race, class and popular culture by mocking soap operas’ and Hollywood films’ storytelling conventions—and many of Linzy’s works feature the male artist dressed in outlandish women’s clothing for an added impact.

January sure is turning out to be quite the hot month for Andr� Balazs and his Standard Hotel chain. After successfully soft-opening his New York property while continually making the social rounds, Andr� has turned himself over to the design and culture arbiters of Arkitip Magazine.

The 50th issue of Arkitip, due out in mid-February, will "focus on the creative side of [Andr�'s] work, paying attention to the way he 'pays attention' to details, his inspirations, as well as some of his obsessions." And if we're to infer anything from the above pose of Andr� on the table, then this could be juicy.

West Hollywood: 'Tears for Fears' Curt Smith Performing at Standard Hollywood

Actually, Smith did this sort of month-long engagement back in October and has re-upped for the month of February. Starting on February 4th, Smith will perform songs every Wednesday from his solo release album in the hotel's Cactus Lounge. The concert starts at 7pm and is reservation only.
