The other day, a HotelChatter Twitter follower asked us for some upscale hotel recommendations in Venice and Rome. More specifically, Jcjteeth wants hotels of the same caliber as Four Seasons: @HotelChatter Any recs on 5Star/upscale hotels in Venice and Rome? Usually stay at @FourSeasons but alas no FS properties in those cities.
That's pretty weird now that we think about it. No Four Seasons in Rome or Venice? They should really get on that!

There's nothing we love more than a good booking mistake—when it falls in our favor, of course. Lucky travelers and locals who caught Italy's Crowne Plaza Quarto D'Altino's major, accidental price cut scored a weekend at the four-star resort for a mere one cent. Rooms at the hotel normally run for up to $214 per night, and its location is an accessible 20-minute train ride away from Venice. ]]>

Earlier this month we wrote about how the Hotel Cipriani in Venice was undergoing an 50th "anniversary facelift", but too bad the Wall Street Journal's Finicky Traveler got there before the new look was completed.
Our fave hotel critic Laura Landro spent a few nights there and the opening of her review says it all:
Our suite at Venice's legendary Hotel Cipriani has stained mauve carpet, ratty faux-bamboo furniture and a platform bed looking into a whirlpool tub-for-two that seems not to have been scrubbed out since the 1970s. We feel positively transported -- to a honeymoon motel in the Poconos.
