Our 2008 Hotel Opening of the Year — the SLS at Beverly Hills — recently got paid a visit by the New York Times, so we had to compare notes. The Gray Lady’s verdict? All that SLS decadence seems to have been a comforting throwback to the beleaguered NYT, who describes the place as a welcome reminder of a “gilded age when hotel minibars swelled with Champagne and hotel bathrooms featured $85 bottles of lotion.”

Writer Fred Bernstein awards due props to designer Philippe Starck, saying the hotel is “beautiful and innovative,” adding “it’s amazing that Mr. Starck has so many ideas left in him.”
