And it is a great view across one of the salt lakes. So named because early explorers saw rats--"Rat's Nest" eventually became Rottnest--that weren't actually rats, but a unique animal called a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quokka">quokka</a> instead. It's a special place with no vehicular traffic, a totally relaxed feel and a perimeter full of great beaches and snorkelling spots. And it's going to get a new hotel.</p><p>The planned new $40 million resort will be 4 and a half star (because over there, they <i>do</i> do things by halves) but not everybody's happy about it.
