Say What? The Heathman Hotel Has a Root Cellar

As a hardcore foodie and big believer in the local/sustainable/seasonal movement, we’re fascinated with Trellis restaurant's Executive Chef Brian Scheehser’s root cellar. Housed underground The Heathman Hotel, the famed farm-to-table chef stashes the likes of onions, potatoes, beets, carrots, fresh crushed tomatoes and canned peaches from his 5-acre organic garden in Redmond in the 40-degree subterranean storage facility.
Trellis has become a bit of a fixture within the Kirkland community. The Heathman Hotel is a popular boutique hotel for business travelers as Microsoft visitors are within the freeway-free proximity of the tech mecca.

As a jaded Seattleite, we admit, we rarely venture east of Emerald City for our social and cultural needs, but are damn happy we did.
Once a logging community, Kirkland then became a bedroom community, and is coming into its own as a hip little urban lite community/Seattle side-trip tourist destination within spitting distance of dozens of wineries. Who knew? (Oh, and Washington wines are well worth checking out.)
Anyway, The Woodmark Hotel is the only hotel smack dab on the shores of Lake Washington.
Woodmark Hotel Has Gone to the Birds

Bird lovers, when visiting Seattle you must stop in at the luxe hotel Woodmark Hotel in Kirkland.
Why? Because instead of putting a dog on staff like other hotels have been doing lately, this hotel uses a cockatoo named Sydney to welcome guests.

He usually perches on a stand opposite the hotel front desk, where he greets visitors with a "Hi." Members of the concierge staff, who care for the bird, are trying to teach him to say "Welcome to the Woodmark."

Related Stories:
· Hotel provides a comfortable perch [Seattle Times]
· Woodmark Hotel reviews [TripAdvisor]
· Inside Fairmont's Doggie Lair [HotelChatter]
