What Women Really Want...In a Hotel

Occasionally when we shack up in a hotel and are confronted with gaudy brocade galore or minimalism a la copious black leather, we find ourself thinking...."whoa, we are totally not in the demographic this place had in mind."

Feeling this way in a space which is to be a temporary home is more than uncomfortable, it can be downright stunting.

To address this issue among women travelers, the Cologne International School of Design did a very awesome thing by conducting a study to discover what is needed to create a "new hotel culture" which successfully melds the design demands of both sexes.

This Hotel Chelsea is much like the Hotel Chelsea in New York in that it is the artist's hotel, discovered by artists and designed and partly supported by them. Cologne Hotel Tips: NYT has ESP?

<![CDATA[ Earlier this week, just a day before the new pope was named, the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/17/travel/17cologne.html?pagewanted=2&oref=login">New York Times</a> put out an article on Cologne, Germany. Now Germany is the motherland for Pope Benedict XVI and the largest Catholic cathedral in Germany is in Cologne. Eerie....Maybe the NYT had an inside source within the cardinals' conclave. Whatever it may be, several hotels were listed when traveling to the city that is "less majestic than Berlin" but apparently more "laid-back" and "fun-loving." One hotel of note is the <a href="http://www.excelsiorhotelernst.de">Excelsior Hotel Ernst,</a> which is over 140 years old and is opposite the cathedral. But a holy location is also pricey. Rooms start at $364 A more modern, and kinkier, place to stay
