As at least two people surmised, yesterday's hotel with the view of the theater crowd was the once-upon-a-time piping-hot Paramount Hotel. (And in case you were wondering, the theater crowd in question had just seen Billy Elliot.)

We hit up the hotel's Library Bar last weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday—and we have to say, at first we were surprised at the choice of venue. We simply had no idea who went to the Paramount these days. The celebs have moved onto The Standard and The Jane, and the hipsters to the Ace Hotel. But the good news is, if you're not into (or in) that scene and prefer something more low key, you can grab a bunch of friends and have the freshly renovated Library Bar almost to yourself.

Here, take a look around at the dark and moody snapshots we took during our visit...

While our friend didn't reserve the space exclusively, most of the people in the lounge area by the 46th Street windows were there for her party, so we can't help but wonder what kind of crowd the place gets on a typical Saturday night. When we took a peek down a the lobby, we saw a beautiful but lonely space with just a few folks checking in.

Perhaps the scene will pick up again if and when that rumored nightclub goes in downstairs, although when we asked the promoters working on this concept yesterday they had no updates for us.

We say: enjoy the peace and quiet while you can. The Library Bar is cozy but spacious, the cocktails aren't as outrageously priced as they are at some hotel bars ($13; beer is $6–8), and you can still go there with a group and feel like you're in your own clubhouse.

Who needs '90s-era Leonardo anyway?
