Great room, mediocre service

Rating: 8

I loved staying at the W but the service was ok. For a luxury hotel, you would expect speedier responses. I called for an electrician and it...

Definitely Different

Rating: 8

We arrived around 6:00pm on a Sunday in mid September. Other postings warned of a crowded venue later in the evening but our arrival time found only around a dozen. The fire pit was surprisingly large with generous flame and available seating. Certainly the sand underfoot is a nice idea and made for a relaxed atmosphere. For more romantic seating there are three booths along one side with flowing sheer drapes blowing in the breeze. The service was excellent, as would be expected with so few clients, and the drinks pricey, also as expected. With the description of rooftop I expected a view but in fact this roof was just second floor so no luck. The music was a nice background style and initially at a decent level with their sound system handling it well. Later, at around 6:40, really not very late, the music was turned up considerably and their system clearly on it's limit. I can imagine it not being too pleasant later unless dancing rather than talking was your priority. Almost overlooked might be the approach room downstairs, hyper-romantic with dim lighting largely by candles and candle lanterns and a black decor, definitely the next move after a fun dance session in the sand.

Sand, cocktails, music and a fire pit!

Rating: 8

I went here with my uncle and his date after dinner back in early 2002. We arrived fairly early, and we were able to get prime seating directly in front of their fire pit. The drinks were pricey but strong. The sand was a nice touch, and the background music was decent. As the night progressed, the place became crowded, seemingly beyond capacity. People practically fought for seating near the fire pit as the temperature dropped. I'd recommend this as a great place for after-dinner cocktails, but if crowds aren't your thing, then avoid the Beach Bar for late weekend evenings.

Fantastic, really unique environment.

Rating: 10

Warm sand a firepit make it really unique and a great place to hang out. And if the weather is not so great you can still enjoy the "Living Room" downstairs.

    • Happy Hour from 4pm til close every Thursday!
    • Beach bar on the roof is unique and has great drinks
    • Amazing coffee in the lobby!
    • Smoothie is "very berry."
    • It's nice but definitely tries too hard. Not worth the charge. The bar prices are outrageous.
    • The Acura Experience is a complimentary service provided by Acura to guests of the W Hotel.
    • . . . born and raised!
    • Free Wi-Fi in the lobby ("Living Room") is great. You might need to fight for a plug though so make sure your laptop or tablet is juiced up.
    • Take advantage of the Acura car service. Nice!!!!

    • Love this place!!!!
    • @WHOTELSD. California. Love.
    • Party with SD Latino Film Fest!
    • Check out the beach on the roof!
    • The worst w I've ever been to not modern at all.. The servers are nice though!
    • Cool corner room suites are really nice! Great blue wall color in the room.
    • Quiet during the week - perfect time to chill out in the lobby in one of the many lounge areas.
    • the breakfast was "meh" and way to expensive (50 bucks for two poached eggs, bacon and a croissant? srsly?) ... but i like the place because the staff is really nice and friendly.
    • I love the W Hotel. Saturday night is where it's at with TK Productions!!
    • Great hotel. Great rooms. Beach Bar is awesome. Unfortunately it's not in Gaslamp.
    • I love the W SD. Rooms are cool, staff is excellent, maybe the best of any hotel I've stayed in - and I stay in a lot. The restaurant has great breakfast. Internet is a little slow though.
    • Lack of electrical outlets is disappointing and frustrating. Mod decor if that's your style. (Unfortunately, it's not mine.)
    • Looking for food & fun in the Gaslamp Quarter? $10 off fondue @ The Gaslamp Melting Pot w/ SD Film Festival pass or ticket: http://twtqpon.com/4o1n1c
    • The "rooftop bar" is only a few stories up and serves weak mixed drinks. Order the beer.
    • Outstanding hotel location. Near trolly line and short walk from Gaslamp District. Rooms not very large yet nicely appointed. Upscale hotel with upscale prices.
    • The hotel is well appointed and a great location, but it simultaneously feels like all of the basics are extra cost, and the cost of some things is too high.
