Not The Best

Rating: 2

The place is decorated like an episode of Mami Vice circa 1980's. Lots of hidden expenses. I.E Valet parking is $40/night!!!! Rooms were grungy and small. Honesty, I'm amazed at all the positive feedback. Either people are lowering their standards or someone's self-posting.

The Onyx is in a great location. It is in close proximity to the TD Banknorth Garden and the North End, with all its fine dining choices. ...

Prepare yourself for extraordinary service at a funky boutique hotel.

Rating: 10

My exceptional experience at the Onyx started when I booked my room at the hotel. After much research, which led me to the (mostly) great reviews, I booked it at a reasonable price. Several days later, I decided that I wanted to do something special for our anniversary, so I called the hotel and asked if I could have a bottle of white wine waiting for us upon check in. The gentleman helping me on the phone told me that they could do ?pretty much anything I wanted.? I ended up setting up wine, chocolate covered strawberries and a rose petal turn down. Over the course of the next few weeks, I called several times to check on a few things. Every time I called I spoke with someone extraordinarily friendly and helpful (Evan and Cecilia at the front desk stand out especially) and I really felt like I was a special guest. The day of our arrival I had a bit more communication with the desk as my surprise was about to unfold, and I knew I was in good hands. They had everything prepared and when I arrived at the room, everything was perfect. The rose petals were all over the bed and the floor and the room looked beautiful. Aside from my special experience, I should point out that we were treated wonderfully, with fabulous customer service, and we witnessed the same toward others (which is a great feeling!) We overheard the young man working the front desk on the phone giving detailed directions to a guest on their way and even offered to stay on the phone with them until they had reached the hotel. EVERYTHING was totally above and beyond a ?normal? hotel experience: The friendly thorough check-in; The welcome sign and bowl of treats for the ?pet-of-the-day?; The Aveda toiletries; The advertised eco-friendly aspects; And the funky stylish decor of the rooms - this hotel deserves much praise. Lastly, anyone who says the rooms are small is definitely from a small town themselves and not used to a city hotel. The rooms are perfectly sized for a couple.

Treated like royalty!

I stayed at the Onyx Hotel for 3 nights with my BF. Every single staff member we came in contact with went above and beyond with the warmth, service, and hospitality. It was truly impressive. They have a nice wine and cheese reception every evening, the rooms are very nice (a little on the small side) with super comfortable beds, large flat screen tv. One small complaint is that breakfast is said to be served until 11:30 on sundays, we came doen at about 11:10 and they said we were too late, they stopped serving! No big deal though. Plus, the location was great, walking distance to everything. Overall it was a fabulous experience, highly recommended.

Something Different

Rating: 8

I came to Boston on business for a week and didn't want to stay at a large chain. Kimpton hotels are some of my company's preferred hotels, so I chose the Onyx for my week-long stay. I was not disappointed. While the neighborhood is "up and coming" I did not feel unsafe at all. There are many things to do nearby (Quincy Market, Fenueil Marketplace, Fleet Center, etc) and the t stop is very close. Additionally, within 3 blocks of the hotel you'll find a 7-11, numerous bars and restaurants, a liquor store, a Dunkin Donuts, a Subway, an Au Bon Pain and various other business-traveler-friendly stores and businesses. Cabs in Boston are generally cheaper than other cities, but take the T if you are so inclined, as it's very close to the hotel.

Kimpton's done it again!

Rating: 10

My recent stay at the Onyx was fabulous! The location is great (Walking distance to serval area attractions). The staff was VERY friendly and helpful. My stay went smooth. The rooms are a bit smaller than average but the down comforters, EXTREMELY comfortable bed and room atmosphere made up for that. The rooms are stylish. The bathrooms are wonderful. Spacious and clean. The Ruby Room is very trendy and inexpensive. Great atmosphere to start the night out on the town. This newer hotel is keeping up with it's competitors in the area. Kimpton has done it again! I WILL stay again!

Nicely appointed but very small room

Rating: 6

Good stuff first. Loved the location. The financial district is great on the weekends. Helpful young staff willing to give plenty of tips on stuff to do. Must also give kudos to the bathroom. Plenty of shelf space for toiletry items and lots of nice towels. Overall, cant deny that the room was very nicely appointed with a down comforter, bathrobes, pretty much everything youd need but it had one fatal flaw. It was really small. Too bad! Means we cant jot this one down as a no-brainer.

Pretty good, will get better.

I stayed overnight on my way through New England, and it was a pretty good value. The staff is very helpful and friendly, and the room was very comfortable...I didn't want to get out of bed, but they also have a pretty awesome continental breakfast. My only complaint was that I checked in really late at night, and the night staff didn't seem prepared when I asked if any restaurants around were open, but there was room service 24/7, and it's a new hotel, it can only get better. The day staff was more informed.

Very Good but not great

Rating: 8

The room is luxurious, but it is a bit small. The bar is trendy with nice mood lighting and good music, but it is also small and not that packed. The location is very convenient to Boston, but the staff told me it takes about 15-20 minutes to call a cab. Onyx is a very good stay but it falls shy of great because there are these little issues with it. I definitely would recommend it though. I had a comfortable and pleasant stay and above all, the service was very good. Free Internet access was nice.

Great Little Place

Rating: 10

After a room cancellation due to dissappointment with one of Boston's most popular hotels my husband and I checked into the Onyx. We were thrilled with our decision! The room was a comfortable size, very stylish, and the bedding (complete with down pillows and a down comforter) was luxurious! The housekeeping was impeccable and the entire staff was helpful and friendly. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Ruby Room IS a JOKE

Rating: 2

My friend and I went in to have a drink at the Ruby Room on a good review from a reputable local magazine. Don't you hate it when the food that you order comes out and it looks nothing like it did on the menu, that was the feeling I had when I saw the tiny Ruby Room. It was labeled as the new "place to see and be seen"..HA it was 12midnight on a Sat and NO ONE was there except some drunk blue collar type at the bar...not impressed. The service was good, but received from a cocktail waitress who looked like she strolled out of bed.......another mistake for Ms. Spears. In a place like Puritan laced Boston, I see the stock plummeting FAST Good Luck Onyx
