Partner Reviews: Shelborne South Beach
I went to the Shelborne this weekend and was scared when i saw these other reviews from 2007. I didn't find any of these complaints, in fact they front desk was wonderful, the room was great, and it didn't look old althought it was built in 1940's Maybe the person that stayed there is a 5 star hotel girl with a 3 star budget or just not a nice person, im sorry but the complantes are not acurate in my experience NOV 2008 sounds like a miserable person who had a miserable time.
We booked a room at the Shelborne for three nights when a friend came to Miami --- what a mistake. I was shocked when I saw the room - hideous, peeling furniture from 1982, disgusting damp carpet, cramped beds, and bad A/C. I demanded a new room, but it was supposedly booked (doubtful). The room was way over-priced at $250/night during July (low season), and I could not believe this hotel had the nerve to charge us that much for one of the worst rooms I have ever seen in my life. The valet parking is an additional $30/night, and the crappy bar next to the pool (complete with broken ladder covered with "caution" tape) serves domestic beer for $9 a can., frozen drinks for $15. Room service, also horrible, for example a can of Sprite and dinner plate of "shrimp scampi" comprised of 5 overcooked shrimp with a little angel hair pasta drowned in olive oil for $41.00. No, I'm not kidding. DO NOT STAY HERE it is awful and you'd be much better off paying an extra $50 and going to the Shore Club, Delano, Raleigh, etc. or stay at one of the smaller boutique hotels on Collins for a comparable rate or even less money (i.e. Chesterfield, Lilly-Leon).
The Shelborne Hotel's reservation department and customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I made a booking, six months in advance, and they realized that they could get more money because it was during high season. They cancelled my reservation and told me that I could rebook at a higher rate.
I stayed at the Shelborne over the 4th of July weekend and I was extremely disappointed with the quality of the hotel. The hotel room looked nothing like the rooms they advertise on their website. The bathroom was too small and had no ventilation. The carpet was stained and the lighting was horrible. When I went to the front desk to let them know that our phone and lamp was not working properly, the staff was rude. The only good part of the hotel is that it is on the beach and the beds were comfortable. I would never stay at the Shelborne again. I learned my lesson and will be staying at hotel chains from now on.
My husband and I just stayed there last weekend and the hotel is right on the sand of South Beach. Our room was facing the beach, so we had an awesome view. they are located right in the middle of everything in that area. the decor is really beachy and glamorous. the staff was nice, but go elsewhere for food b/c it is really expensive there. even the cokes are expensive. but on their website they have promotions where you can get a super cheap oceanfront room.
