Hotel 17

From the hotel:

The Hotel 17 is a fantastic hotel, conveniently located downtown in the Gramercy Park District. Rooms are decorated eclectically. Entertainment Weekly voted Hotel 17 in the top 10 coolest movie locations. Many of the rooms are considered to be "miniature studios" by many world renowned photographers and movie directors. A few years ago, Woody Allen filmed his movie "Manhattan Murder Mystery" at Hotel 17.

An old New York experience at an old New York price.

Rating: 8

A friend and I were seeing a band at Irving Plaza and decided to make a "rock & roll night" of it and stay at a hotel nearby (our only other options being the $400/night W or Gramercy Park). I am accustomed to relatively upscale travel and am also a bit of cleanfreak/germaphobe, so my expectations were low. But we were very pleasantly surprised by the overall comfort and tidiness here--even the bedding was relatively crisp and clean. Rooms are small and devoid of many frills but the overall vibe is quite charming if you roll with it; sort of "old New York" and almost transporting (anyone who has traveled in Europe will be immediately familiar with the approach here; this is not your American chain hotel). The only downside is the shared bathrooms: They are very clean (as others have noted) and there are several on each floor (also, the rooms have small sinks for basic washing up and toothbrushing) but going to the bathroom in the middle of the night could be a bummer and the average high-maintenance female (or male) will almost certainly not dig the concept so much. But for $100? I would absolutely go back. And it's a great neighborhood away from the tourist hell of midtown.

Mixed Feelings

Rating: 8

I was in a love hate relationship with this place when i stayed. I'll first state the "love" part of it: I really enjoyed the location of hotel 17 it was only about 2 blocks away from the union square subway, also, there were a lot of places to shop in that area as well as nice delis and restaurants. The place was VERY affordable (to NY standards) the room was an ok size and the shared bathrooms were always clean. Now to the "hate" part- the desk staff was not that helpful, when we asked for directions to places they didn't know where anything was. Also, after a certain time at night you had to ring the door bell to get into the hotel like.. as if we had curfews? Also, we had a friend over in our room visiting us for a few hours and the front desk called up and asked us to pay for her to stay in our room, even after we explained she wasn't a guest at the hotel (the insisted she was...). Also, that call that they gave us (which we picked up) was charged to our bill. Also, the elevator in the hotel (there was only one) was SOOO slow and tiny tiny tiny! I think we stayed on the third floor- we could litterally run up and down the stairs faster than the elevator. it was annoying! All in all, the place was clean, no frills and very very cheap. I do recommend staying there if you dont mind a weird desk staff.

Fantastic place in perfect location

Rating: 10

This is a charming place to stay. The staff is friendly and accomodating. The rooms are clean and "good enough". Anyone who has spent time in NYC knows that small is the standard. The shared bathrooms are clean and not an inconvenience. Check your high expectations at the door - if you are expecting the marriott or holiday inn or sheraton, then go stay there. For the rest of us, we'll take Hotel17 with it's no-frills price and perfect location.

Small rooms for three, excellent shared bath

Rating: 8

A nice and small hotel in a great location. You won't feel the "weight" of shared bath because they're constantly clean and you have 4 of them on each floor ! Just be prepared to small beds..

Cool and Cheap

Rating: 10

I always stay here if I'm travelling alone - its safe, clean and quiet. If you can get a room overlooking the street - that's the best place to be; light, views of gorgeous apartments, tree-tops and a sense of space. The communal bathrooms are spotless and the staff straight-forward but helpful. The dark wood corridors and original features make for a great, old New York atmosphere in a handy location.

Cheap and Cheerful

Rating: 8

My mother and brother stayed here in June and were very happy. The neighborhood is a delightful tree-lined oasis of brownstones, it's an easy walk to the east village and the subway at Union Square, it's quiet, and - best of all - it's cheap. This isn't the Ritz, but if you don't need a pool and roomservice, and just want a plain, clean room in a great location for a price you can afford, you won't find better in New York.

Never again

Rating: 1

What a dump! I stayed here in Oct. 2000. The most important thing I learned from my experience is to NEVER stay at a place that does not accept credit cards and requires cash or traveler's checks upfront for the entire stay. Do yourself a favor and avoid this "hotel". Spend the extra money and stay at a real, reputable hotel--it will make your visit to NYC much more enjoyable. I would never recommend Hotel 17 to ANYONE.

    • Clean and typical!
    • May not be the fanciest around, but it's clean, affordable and well situated. I've stayed here several times. The lower floor bathrooms have better water pressure.
    • Un buen hotel! tranquilo, sencillo y ante todo muy acogedor.Buena relacion calidad precio. (Aqui se rodo "Asesinato en Manhatan")
    • I read good online reviews and I have agreed with the main points: it's clean, tidy, the bathrooms are always free, the location is good. On the other side: the door card fails every day, walls = thin
    • This European-style hotel is a good choice for self-sufficient travelers who are looking for a clean and comfortable place to sleep.
    • sleep like rock while the ancient window box A/C whirs and spins blotting out the sounds of E 17th below
