A Hidden NYC Gem!
When I am in Paris, I stay in the 6eme arrondissement and surround myself in a neighborhood rich with Bohemian Parisian artistic culture that provides a quaint feel. When I travel to New York City, I look for the same quaint feel but I want the New York City vibe and culture. We all know how expensive the city that never sleeps can be and how much there is to see and do. So when I stay in this great metropolis, I want to be able to access New York City but on a respectable budget. And I always seem to find myself at the same location, The Herald Square Hotel. What a fantastic little gem! The accommodations are outstanding, the staff is welcoming, the location is superb (only a few blocks from Penn Station and the subway) and if I really get lazy and don't want to head too far but I feel like taking in some New York energy, there is a trendy and very New York type of restaurant-cafe next-door. On my next trip up to New York City, I will stay at the same location. I highly recommend it!
Great Life and Times at the Herald Square Hotel!
We stayed at the Herald Square Hotel in New York City recently, and loved it! The hotel is convenient to everything, only a few safe walking blocks away from Madison Square Garden and Times Square. It's a very classically styled place. We traveled with a friend who stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms, done over in the period style of the historical significance of the hotel, and just beautifully restored. But our room was also wonderful. There is definitely a feel to the building that you are in the place where Time and Life magazines were done. The hotel has pictures of from the covers of the magazines that used to be created there hanging in the narrow hallways. The marble circular stairs bring you into the halls at each floor but yes, there is an elevator too! While there is no restaurant or room service, the breakfast area in the lobby has coffee, tea and hot chocolate available, and there are a couple of places very close by, including a wine bar next door, a market just down the street with great bagels, and a Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin-Robbins just up the street. The lobby is small, but once you enter your room you forget about that and you just enjoy being there. The towels were thick and bed linens were elegant, white comforters, crisp sheets and classic cotton blankets. The bathroom was grand, and the mattresses and pillows were top of the line. Flat screen big TVs and free high speed internet service were in both rooms. It's a great place to stay!
Excellent Hotel and Location
I stayed at the Herald Square Hotel for the Westmister Dog Show I was there for 4 days the staff was excellent and very friendly. My room was spacious and very clean. The bedding was very comfortable and warm. I would recommend this hotel to all my friends it is very reasonable and so very close to anywhere you wanted to go. I will be back next year that is for sure.

My Favorite Hotel in NYC
My mom and I travel to NYC alot, and we've stayed at an array of places, including the Waldorf-Astoria. However, the Herald Square hotel is ...
Best!
This hotel is perhaps the best place to stay for your value. This place is on 31st Street bet. 5th Ave. and Broadway. It's got Ayza Wine & Chocolate Bar next door. You can get to any restaurant you want from this location. I stayed for a full 2 weeks and my room was always clean and neat when I arrived and cleaned well when I returned, and I'm a slob in hotels. When I had a complaint about charges to my room they were promptly taken off without a lot of hassle. Kudos to this hotel. This is where I wish I had stayed all the time.
Great Value In The Heart Of The City...
We recently stayed at the Herald Square Hotel and after much researching decided we'd give it a go seeing as the location and price were great. When we arrived we noticed they were doing soem exterior renovations, upon walking inside i see that the lobby isn't very upscale and I become a little concerned. The happways leading to the room reminded me of a dorm hall, but maybe it's because of tiled floors. Overall, the room was very nice, super comfy, flat screen tv and free HBO! The bathroom was also very large and recently renovated with aveda soap included. However when i showered in the morning I had a problem with the water going from warm to ice cold and then having to wait a minute or so to go back to warm. Oh, there was no thermostat in the room and the room was extremely warm, so we had to use the AC in the middle of January. All in all an amazing value and would definitely recommend and stay here again.
Best Value For Budget
Found this hotel on Expedia -- which did not calculate all the various taxes that would be included, so beware of the "$97 a night" ad -- it's closer to about $130 after all taxes have been added. BUT it is STILL the best deal ever! Rooms were clean and remodeled with great beds; rooms were overall very nice, although you could hear everyone and anyone else who was entering or exiting their room. You just can't beat how close you are to everything within walking distance. I literally parked the car (beware of the rip of Park Centre right next door on W. 31st -- more than $100 for two days when the sign misleads you in thinking it's closer to about $30/day) checked in and headed out on the town. The service at the hotel was excellent, with very polite people working the desk. I would definitely stay there again! Caveat: Not the place for a romantic interlude -- for that I recommend Club Quarters in the financial district. Herald Square is simply a crash pad.
Amazing Location! Super Clean! Friendly Staff!
This hotel is New York City's best kept secret. Seriously. Start with the great prices. Add in the amazing location. To top it off, our room was HUGE, the bathroom HUGE, and the entire room was immaculate. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom stocked with plenty of towels and Aveda soap. There was even a flat panel TV and free HBO! What else could you ask for? Sure the lobby is small, and the elevators tiny, but these are very easy to overlook. I recommend this hotel to anyone on a budget in New York. I will definately stay here again.
Nice hotel, awesome location
Even if this hotel was terrible, the location cannot be beat. So close to Macy's (maybe a little too close, my wallet thinks!), right by Penn Station so that you can hop on any subway train to take you to all parts of NYC. Street is quiet (for NY) even though it is in a busy area. But the hotel is most definitely NOT terrible. Staff was very friendly. Rooms were large and bright. Bathroom was huge (bigger than some studio apartments in Manhattan!). Beds and pillows were super-comfy. They had a flat panel TV in the room (not that I watched much TV because, hey, I was in NY). I would definitely stay there again.
Great place to feel safe and comfortable
I just spent a week in and around the Phoenix area. The first part of the week I was in a Hyatt Hotel. The second part of the week at a 5 star golf resort. I have stayed at the Herald Square Hotel in NYC several times. It was more comfortable and the staff more friendly than the big name hotels. I much prefer the friendly service and charming atmosphere at the Herald Square Hotel. I feel safer in the middle of New York City in this little jewelbox than in the middle of the desert! The rooms are maintained better and the unique decor of Life Magazines and artifacts make this my favorite location in New York City. It's location near Macy's, the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, and a central subway hub make it easy for me to get to any location I desire.
amazing quality @ 1/2 the price
i was so happy with my stay at the Herald Square. the quality was much better then other hotels that were twice the price. the rooms were roomy and have the luxury of most 5 star hotels. The herald Square is Mahatten's best kept secret. The location is great and centralized, the staff is friendly and helpful. i highly recommend The Herald Square.

A Great Place to stay and eat!
Nice small hotel in mid-town Manhattan. Walking distance from Penn Station. The building is very old (original home of Life Magazine). ...
Great value
I just spent 4 nights at the Herald Square -- my new New York friend. Great location. The first 2 nights I was alone, so I took a single room. I was pleased to find it so immaculately clean. My room was admittedly very small, but as I was in NYC I didn't plan to spend much time there other than to sleep, and the rate couldn't be beat. As a woman traveling alone, I felt totally safe there. When my friend arrived, we changed to a larger room with 2 dbl beds. It was spacious and, again, immaculately clean. I'll be back.
Remember Me at The Herald Square Hotel
A recent reunion in New York City was nicely punctuated with a weekend stay at The Herald Square Hotel. The extremely reasonable rates and friendly staff were a welcome addition to the glorious festivities of the weekend. W estayed in one of the hotels newest rooms and what really amazed me were the rooms appointments: A flatscreen TV, a beautifully decorated bathroom and (quite frankly) one the most comfortable beds my girlfriend and I ever slept in. As a man of moderate means, I was grateful that my lodging cost enabled me to spend a bit more money on entertainment and dining. Needless to say you can add my name to the hotels loyal customer base.
First Time in NYC - Great Hotel!
Thank you so much to the Herald Square Hotel for making my husband and I feel so welcomed in New York City! This was our first time in the Big Apple and I must say the staff certainly knew the "art" of treating people. We enjoyed seeing all that New York had to offer and never feel lost as the staff provided us with everything we needed to get around. The hotel also provided a lot of history, in part to all the wonderful Time Life pictures & magazine covers within the hallways. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who wants great service, a great nights sleep, and a great price!
Life of a Hotel
This hotel may just become our New York City "home-away-from-home" My wife & I stayed at the Herald Square Hotel on a friend's suggestion and had a wonderful experience. The place is amazing. Our room (812) was a nice size, bright and clean, the queen-sized bed with white linen and extra pillows was extra comfortable for my wife and I (Just like home). The price was $99.00 a midweek special we found on their cherub filled website, it was very easy to do. The Staff were very friendly, and Mr. Puchall told us about some of Life Magazine's incredible history. The walls of the Hotel are covered with artwork and memorabilia from Life, so it's like staying at a museum. For the money, location, and style, I m recommending the Herald Square Hotel to all my "friends and relatives" when they visit New York City. We will definitely be back!
Good Deal
I stayed here in October of 2003. I frequent NYC often so I am aware of the scary decisions when choosing a hotel. I choose this hotel after reading the many reviews and decided to give it a shot. Yes, the price was wonderful, for NYC, but I was slightly disappointed. I booked a "large double" room and was shocked at how small the "large double" was. The tile floors in the hallway were scary, but the room was clean and comfy. I would probably stay here again. The Quality Hotel on Broadway is usually my first choice. Same small rooms but I like that hotel better.
Great Location for the $$
This is a great hotel to stay at if you need a good location to crash at. Lacking in the ammenities that most other hotels would offer, it offers a GREAT value for your hard earned cash. The staff were very friendly and helpful with places to see. I will definitely stay there again for a weekend to explore NYC.
Excellent
Excellent place to stay while in NYC. Great room and atmosphere. Cheers
I love NY
Every time I visit NYC I stay at the world famous Herald Square Hotel. The staff amazes me in that they always seem to remember me by name. The rooms are clean and the hotel is in a handy part of town to most anywhere. PLUS the rates are GREAT!!! AND who wouldn't want to stay at a hotel with such history! Life Magazine brings back nostalgic memories and I love looking at all the covers and the angels. So check it out when you're in the city. I ALWAYS do. See you next time!!! Sincerely, Dr. RT
Love the location
I heard about the Herald Square Hotel from a girlfriend of mine who had gone to New York on business. She said it was not fancy, but for the price gave you a decent, clean room, the basics, and had a good location. I was happy to find this all to be true, but I had never stayed in the area that this hotel is in before, and it really is an EXCELLENT location! We were in walking distance to the theaters, to the Village, and it was near subways that took you everywhere else. A real find.
Big Apple didn't bite me
Business takes me into New York several times each year and everyone from the CEO on down has had to watch travel budgets. I came across the Herald Square Hotel on this site and gave it a try, and they have won my business hereon out. I got a good room at a price that makes you wonder *Where's the catch?*, but there was none. Nice people at the desk, made some good recommendations re restaurants, and a comfortable bed.
Horrible Herald
My friend and I stayed in the Herald Square Hotel. We had a room that was only two feet wider than a double bed. It was only twice as long as the double bed, too. I was afraid to step on the carpet because it was dirty and stained. The bathroom was miniscule. There were no toiletries available, including soap. We called the front desk to ask for soap, but no one ever delivered it to us. After waiting for over an hour, we ran a few blocks to a pharmacy to pick some up. Ridiculous.
