Update: Gizo Hotel Earthquake Reports Emerging

The Solomon Islands in the New Georgia Islands archipelago was rocked this morning by an 8.1 giant earthquake resulting in a tsunami that has so far killed 20 people and left the resort town of Gizo heavily damaged.

Jaunted mentioned this morning how the quake has affected Australian beaches due to the fear of a tsunami but Gizo which is popular amongst Aussies and Kiwis for its central location in the South Pacific and diving has been largely wiped out As one resident said, "All the buildings on the coast are gone, washed away by the tsunami. There's nothing left."

The town's main hotel, the Gizo Hotel has reported significant damage but said that all guests and employees have been moved to higher ground.

Developing: Solomon Island Tsunami Hits Gizo Hotel Hard

The Solomon Island's popular Gizo Hotel has been significantly damaged by today's South Pacific Tsunami.

The extent of the damage is not known, however the epicenter is said to have been in Gizo, home of the hotel.

Harry Wickham, a hotel worker in Gizo, told New Zealand Television that a torrent of water ten feet high poured through the town, smashing buildings along the waterfront.
