Rooftop Views Found in Ghana

You know the scene. You open the door to your brand new hotel room, run over to the window, open the blinds and bam, you are hit with the anti-view. Maybe you are looking down a dirty alley, witnessing a drug deal, staring at an air shaft in the face, or seeing a brick wall. Whatever you are viewing it is not extremely pleasurable. Accra, the capital of Ghana, is actually quite a lovely place. There are beaches! There's nightlife! Museums! Rich history! But you'd never know it if this was the view out your hotel room window.

And here's a fun fact: supposedly, the word "Accra" comes from an Akan word meaning "ants", which is in reference to all the ant-hills around the city. And if you were staying in the Novotel Accra City Centre, you may look out your window and think that those little anthills had grown into ginormous anthills and have taken over the whole entire city and you might get scared. But don't worry, it's just a lil' bit of construction in your standard anti-view, blocking out everything there is to see.

This shot of the Novotel view comes via bagaball, who, we assume, was probs disappointed when that "4 star hotel ideal for a holiday or business trip to Accra" turned out to have a view like this. He was likely even more disappointed when he learned that he would not get to glimpse giant ants because those giant piles of dirt were not giant anthills.

Rates here average around $186, though TripAdvisor reviews suggest that this may not be your best bet in Accra, whether views are important to you or not.

Ghana's Win Limited to Soccer, Not Its Hotels

With the recent World Cup game win over the U.S. causing high spirits for the people of Ghana, we're thinking now is the time if ever to look into this country's hotel situation. The Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra is arguably the country's best hotel with its 5-star status, although they still can't seem to afford having their own website.

But just as we started getting into the spirit of booking a hotel in Ghana, warnings began appearing that had us rethinking our world cup fervor-turned tourism interest. For a 5-star it appears that the Labadi Beach Resort falls short. Although the staff is described as friendly, they are also described as slow and hard to find. Take the UK Telegraph's words for example:

I plumped for the country's smartest hotel - The Labadi Beach - and concluded that more than a few days there would drive me mad. It is sumptuously furnished, well-appointed (air-conditioning, TVs, minibars, gym) and the grounds are exquisitely landscaped. But the service is desperately slow, there is nothing to do and no one you would really care to talk to (expats, Korean businessmen, mercenaries, and the odd, maverick tourist like me).

More reviews show evidence of "shoddy" rooms, no TV reception, and mosquitos galore.

It's too bad, we were pretty excited for a minute there, of our future jaunt in Ghana. But we're actually Brazil fans anyway.
