It's Friday so we thought we'd lighten the mood a little with some bizarre news from the hotel world. Enter: Styrofoam Art in Gadong. Hasn't anyone told those folks in Brunei that Styrofoam isn't exactly PC anymore?

To the Rizqun International Hotel's credit, they showcase not only Styrofoam art, but fruit art as well. Self-taught artiste Chagat bin Saban has gotten quite the rep here for his work which creates a "pleasant ambiance for customers." Well it certainly provides something to talk about:

"All you need is be creative and know how to handle the sculpturing knives. You must also have interest in the art, otherwise you will get bored," he said.

Using knives of various sizes, Chagat made flowers on watermelons, papayas and other fruits. He designed birds and animals on potatoes and yam.

Similarly his larger designs were done on styrofoam which he needed to paint to make them look realistic.

Chabat feels that his work keeps a fresh look for the hotel as the frequent changes means constant renovations. But with a fruit display ongoing for one-week, we hope they have a good exterminator on hand.
