Not Much Cool at the Five Cool Rooms
Allow us to introduce our newest contributor. J. Jennings Moss has started a new business travel blog over at Portfolio.com which focuses on business travel. Recently, he scoped out the hotel scene in Buenos Aires. Got any questions about biz travel? Send 'em to us and we'll have him answer them for you.
Don't be fooled by the name. There isn't much that's "cool" about the Five Cool Rooms Hotel in Buenos Aires.
A disclosure to begin with: Five Cool Rooms was not our first choice for a boutique hotel. That honor, based on reviews in HotelChatter and word-of-mouth from friends, was Home Hotel. But Home was booked during our trip in early April, and we were swayed by the generally positive write-ups we’d seen of Five Cool Rooms, as well as by its advertising and jazzy website.

Tango Down To Buenos Aires With Hilton

According to our sources, the Hilton Buenos Aires was inspired by “Dancing with the Stars” to offer its "Totally Tango" experience. Guess you never do know when inspiration will strike.
Available from now through December 31, the package starts at $259 a night for a room, and includes a private lesson with a tango instructor, tickets to the Casa de Carlos Gardel Museum, an evening at the Esquina Carlos Gardel dinner and tango show, and “a souvenir CD of techno tango music.” Sounds...interesting. Although it's not really new as the hotel has been promoting this for a few years now. But we thought we'd give it a closer look.

Enjoy Your Own 'Mansion' in Buenos Aires

The neighborhood of Recoleta is filled with some of the fanciest houses in Buenos Aires, and now, a New York venture capital and real estate firm called the InvestProperty Group is turning one of them into the city’s newest five-star hotel, the Algodon Mansion.
Set to open in August 2009, the unfinished Algodon — we’re talking a real hard-hat zone of exposed brick and cement, some cracked plaster and excavation lighting — recently played host to the Argentine press, hoping to garner some buzz over the coming months.

Axel Hotel Excels in Buenos Aires

We keep hearing how Buenos Aires is the gay capital of South America, but we didn’t believe it until the Axel Hotel opened.
Axel properties are geared towards the gay community but make sure to call themselves “heterofriendly.” That philosophy especially makes sense in a city like Buenos Aires where the nightlife is extremely mixed, and you’d be hard pressed to find an exclusively gay or exclusively straight bar or club.

(Very) Southern Hospitality at Los Cauquenes
After twelve days of luxury cruising around the Antarctic Peninsula, during which we had been pampered, petted, watered with champagne and force fed with exotic treats, we were ready for a reality check. After docking in Ushuaia, therefore, we booked ourselves into a simple, spartan hostel run by a religious charity, where guests were asked to pick herbs from the kitchen garden and stir them into the vast cauldron of broth from which lunch and dinner derived.
Just kidding, of course. We went to Los Cauquenes -- the best hotel in Ushuaia, and the southernmost 5-star lodging in the world.

'Legendary' Lodging At The End of the World
Ushuaia is the world’s southernmost city. It has an airport, a ski center, magnificent views in all directions, some decent seafood restaurants, a busy port, three types of beer, two terrestrial TV channels, 9,546 overpriced outdoor clothing outlets, and some attractive lodgings.

Where to Stay in Mendoza
All this week, Eric Rosen will be bringing us his hotel recommendations for an interesting trip down in South America. He explains it all in our latest hotel guide--Budget Boutique Hotels of the 33rd Parallel South.
Mendoza is probably my favorite destination in Argentina. Sure, there are the natural splendors of the glaciers in the south and Iguazu Falls in the north. Buenos Aires definitely beckons with her joie de vivre, impromptu tango street demonstrations, and what might just be the best clubbing scene in the world.
But Mendoza--sprawling, dusty Mendoza--nestled in the eastern foothills of the towering Andes, is still my favorite. Why? Because you can drink some of the best wines in the world for very little money, and then you can work off your hangover with a day of hiking, horseback riding, and white water rafting in the nearby countryside.

The Budget Boutique Hotels of the 33rd Parallel South
All this week, Eric Rosen will be bringing us his hotel recommendations for an interesting trip down in South America. He explains it all in our latest hotel guide--Budget Boutique Hotels of the 33rd Parallel South.

Thirty-three degrees is an interesting number. According to Masonic lore, it is the line of latitude at which one’s psychic energy dies. Spooky. It is also the latitude of such mundane destinations as Phoenix, Atlanta, Dallas and Long Beach, not to mention Baghdad and Islamabad. Not exactly trendsetting places to jet.
If we flip the globe, however, and trace the same latitude, the route becomes a lot more interesting, taking us in to the heart of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. Thus, we bring you Budget Boutique Hotels of the 33rd Parallel South.
We will lodge you not only in Buenos Aires but also across the Mar De Plata in the little fort town of Colonia del Sacramento, on to chaotic Montevideo, then across the continent to slick Santiago, Chile, before ending up in the wine-lover’s paradise of Mendoza in the Andes foothills. Sounds better than a road trip to Birmingham, Alabama (also at 33 degrees north), now doesn’t it?
Read on to learn more about where you should stay and what you should do along the 33rd Parallel South.

Madonna's Millions Put To Use at Four Seasons Buenos Aires

When Madonna travels, there's no messing around. According to gossip reports, the provocative pop star spent $1 million at the Four Seasons Buenos Aires when she was in Argentina for her Sticky and Sweet tour.
Madonna is said to have splashed out $9,000 a night to stay in the hotel's luxury suite - a private mansion in the grounds - while her 200 backing dancers, singers, make-up artists, choreographers, managers and security took up another 110 rooms, costing a minimum of $600 each.
The Four Seasons is without a doubt one of BA's best luxury hotels yet we're a little dismayed that Madonna wasn't able to negotiate some sort of group rate for her team. $600 a night is crazy expensive. The Moreno Hotel's lofts, which start around $150 a night probably would have suited them better.

Inside The Moreno Hotel
In October, we asked you to help us pick a hotel for Jaunted editor Paul Brady, and while we decided not to spring for the Faena Hotel + Universe, he was just as happy to check out the Moreno Hotel, just south of Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires' San Telmo neighborhood.
Here's his report.

We've Picked a Hotel in Buenos Aires for Jaunted

Finalmente! We have picked a hotel in Buenos Aires for our Jaunted editor Paul Brady to review.
As you know, Paul has been kicking it in BA for a few months now and has thoughtfully offered up his services for a hotel review. Much like we did with our Paris hotel, we decided to leave the power in your hands.
While the Faena Hotel + Universe was a clear winner, our budget simply could not afford it. (Rates were at about $495 a night.)
Yet, thanks to Kelley who wrote in a suggestion to us, we have now found the Moreno Lofts. Here's what Kelly originally wrote to us:
On my past two trips to Buenos Aires, I have stayed at the Hotel Moreno. I love it! The rooms are like small Soho lofts.
Indeed when we skipped over to the website to check out the rooms, not only did we find spacious accommodations but totally budget-friendly ones as well. An extra large room with either a king bed or two double beds started at $175 a night and that includes free WiFi. Sweet. We can't wait for the full review next week.

Don't Forget to Pick a Hotel in Buenos Aires for Jaunted

Has all presidential election coverage got you craving executive power? Well, it's a small consolation but you can wield some power here on HotelChatter.
As we told you on Tuesday, Jaunted editor Paul Brady has been working and living in a rental apartment in Buenos Aires for the past few months, but he's gamely offered to do a hotel review for us. And since you had so many good suggestions when we stayed in Paris, we want you to do the same thing here.
Just like last time, the hotel that gets the most comments will be the "winner." In return, Paul will send back a full hotel review, complete with a sexy video tour.
To get the discussion going, he re-read our Buenos Aires Hotel Guide and has put together a few places that sound pretty good. So start voting for your favorite suggestion in comments below!
