The Loden Vancouver Still Has Pricey Rooms Open During The Olympics

The planned cruise ship hotel idea that would house folks coming to Vancouver for the Winter Olympics may have sunk but the Loden Vancouver Hotel, recently voted the #1 Luxury Hotel in Canada by TripAdvisor readers, let us know that they still have rooms available during the games.

But as usual, these prices are incredibly high and there isn't any availability for the start of the games.

We actually found rooms a little lower at the tail-end of the games from February 19 to 22 from $799 CAD a night for a Loden Signature King. A Loden one-bedroom suite was going for $2,200 a night. The hotel also has some availability on February 15 and 16 but only with the one-bedroom suite, again for $2,200 a night.

Still, if you need a hotel and you don't mind paying thousands of dollars for one, then the Loden might be for you.

Play "Spot the Celebrity" at Opus Hotel's Elixir Bistro.

You may be out of luck if you're trying to find a vacant hotel in Vancouver during the Olympics, but that doesn't mean you can't party at a hotel. Head to the Opus Hotel in Vancouver’s popular Yaletown ’hood to be in the middle of the post-Games party scene.

If you are looking for stars, plant yourself at the hotel’s Elixir Bistro. Jennifer Aniston and Bradley Cooper both hung in the hotel restaurant when they were recently in town filming, so it’s likely you’ll see other big names here.

The Loden: No Longer a Kor Hotel But Still Loved By the NYT

Though they might still be part of the British Commonwealth, Canadians definitely have an independent streak, especially when it comes to their American neighbors to the south. And hockey.

Don’t mess with them on hockey. Perhaps that’s why Vancouver’s Loden Hotel left the Kor Hotel Group, er, we mean Viceroy. Of course, this unexpected turn of events should not be surprising for a hotel that has shown its rebellious streak since a bumpy start (opening a full year late!) since it launched last October as the first new hotel in Vancouver in six years.

Even so, The New York Times found plenty to love, eh?

The Vancouver Pride Parade might only happen on August 2, but the Opus Hotel in Vancouver has Pride-related deals happening for much longer — how festive!

The Pride 2009 Package runs from July 18 through to August 10 and includes a Superior Queen room (yes, they made it a queen room intentionally) and a "special welcome indulgence", plus a $50 credit to use in the Opus Bar or, if you need a bit more privacy, on your room's minibar.

And the final bonus: while you're out enjoying some Pride festivities, room service will be visiting you to add an "extra special pride downturn" to be there waiting for you. We don't know what these special additions are but if you stay there, please let us know, because we sure are curious.

You can take the romance of Pride a bit further if you like, because the Opus also has a Propose on Pride package as well. This one includes a bottle of champagne to toast your proposal (assuming it works out well), and breakfast for two in bed the next morning, finishing off with a late checkout of 2pm. Package costs vary according to the date so check directly with the hotel, but you're looking at upwards of C$320 a night.

Vancouver is So Hard Up for Hotel Rooms That a Cruise Ship Is Stepping In

Where: Vancouver, BC, Canada
June 11, 2009 at 8:57 AM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Vancouver has already sold-out its hotels rooms for the 2010 Winter Olympics next February but there is a way to create some extra inventory without having to build a new hotel---use a cruise ship! From the Seattle PI:

A company is bringing in a Norwegian Cruise Line luxury ship for February's Winter Games to help accommodate visitors. Dennis Laliberte, Newwest Special Projects LP president, said the Norwegian Star can fit almost 9,000 people.

Much like a regular hotel, the cruise ship has different room sizes ranging from simple staterooms to bigger suites. But it's also got 13 restaurants, eight lounges, a spa, a fitness center and "sensational nightly entertainment." There will also be live satellite coverage of the Olympic Games so you don't even have to step off the ship to go to the events. Yeah, but you should. You really should.

Packages for the floating hotel start at $350 a night.

The Dudes From 'The Bachelorette' Take Over the Fairmont Vancouver

We sort of prefer The Bachelor to The Bachelorette — what? Doesn't everyone? — but when it comes down to it, we'll watch it if we've got nothin' else happening on a rainy summer night. And then we get addicted to it and yada yada; you know the rest.

We suppose we'll now have a valid excuse to switch it on, though: tonight's episode is hotel geek-esque. The Bachelorette, Jillian, actually surprises the thirteen suitors "with a romantic trip to her hometown of Vancouver."

'Twilight' Shacks Up At The Sutton Place Hotel

Tweens worth their text messaging allowances have spotted (and stalked) teen heartthrobs Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart all over Vancouver during the recent shoot of the cult vampire movie Twilight sequel, New Moon. The cast was seen eating, partying and shopping all over town, and the Sutton Place Hotel was the reported abode of most of the cast, including Kristin Stewart (who stayed on the 12th floor) and Nikki Reed (who was on the 9th floor).

The actors spent their days filming at various locations around town including David Thompson Secondary School (which plays Forks High in the movie) and The Ridge Theatre (in the Kerrisdale neighborhood), while Edward and Bella crazy insiders report sightings of Pattinson sneaking out of the hotel in the wee hours of the morning. And yes, Rob and Kristen are probably dating in real life too.

Pan Pacific Vancouver Opens Their Rooftop Salt Water Pool

Vancouver is not necessarily the city that immediately comes to mind when we think of hotspots with outdoor rooftop pools, but the city's Pan Pacific Hotel has just re-opened its 8th floor terrace and the hotel's heated salt-water outdoor pool.

Apparently, this is the only one of its kind in all of Vancouver and because there's no chlorine, it's much easier on your eyes (literally) and on the environment too. The high temps in Vancouver in the summer only average about 74 degrees in the months of July and August, which is a little chilly for us — but fortunately, the terrace also has a jacuzzi to keep you warm.

A bar and poolside dining service is also open, but just remember not to drink and jacuzzi. Wouldn't want to give your fellow pool-goers something to ruin that pretty view, would you?

The Pan Pacific Vancouver has rates starting at $335CAD, which includes breakfast for two.

Preview Next Year's Olympic Party Scene at The Opus Vancouver

As believers in the act of pre-gaming — that is, tailgating before football games, sipping wine before heading to dinner, taking shots before heading to parties or clubs — we can for sure get on board with, um, a year-in-advance pre-game for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Apparently, it has been determined that Vancouver's Yaletown neighborhood is going to be the 'Olympic Party Zone' when the games roll around, so a hotel in the area, the Opus (home of that let-everyone-know-you're-staying-here 7 Series we've mentioned), has gotten in on the action early to offer a party preview package for people who want to dip their toes into the vast pool of Olympic parties coming up next year.

Let Everyone Know You're Staying at The Opus

Frequent on-the-ground Vancouver hotel spy Chrispitality helpfully demonstrated in his Flickr photo that when you ride in the BMW at The Opus Hotel Vancouver, everyone in town will know where you're staying.

Since this picture was snapped back in 2006, we thought we would just check-in to see what sort of series the hotel is driving these days. Indeed the hotel's car is still a 7 Series BMW that offers complimentary rides to "all downtown locations including all cruise ship terminals, 7 days/week subject to availability."

While we have no qualms about broadcasting our hotel when riding around in town, we imagine Twilight vampire Robert Pattinson, currently in town to shoot the "New Moon" sequel, would probably not do the same.

Is it Time to Start Booking Rooms for the Vancouver Olympics?

Where: Vancouver, Canada
February 25, 2009 at 12:50 PM | by JetSetCD | 4 Comments

Ohmigosh people: there's only another 352 days to book your hotel stay for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics! We're totally kidding; don't freak out yet along with the local Vancouver press. Although technically you should get your Olympic itinerary sorted out as early as possible, we think the National Post is just trying to fake us out by quoting some area hotels' rocketing room rates a year in advance: "Potential Olympic visitors searching for the best online hotel deals might be shocked at the prices quoted at the Executive Inn Express in suburban Richmond. Rooms currently available for $61 to $160 a night will cost $550 to $795 a night during the Games."
