On Your Next BROadtrip, Hit Up An Old Gentemen's Club In Seattle

In 1918, the building that currently houses the DoubleTree Arctic Club Seattle originally opened as a gentlemen's club called (unsurprisingly) The Arctic Club. Its clientele? Successful business men who had become wealthy from the Klondike Gold Rush. These days, the hotel attracts locals and visitors alike to its restored Northern Lights Dome Room, a restored ballroom whose leaded glass domed ceiling (above) simulates the effects of the Northern Lights. Luckily you don't have to go mining for gold in Alaska to enjoy it!

Inside and around the hotel, there is plenty to look at. Unique architectural details—like the 27 carved walrus heads on the exterior of the building, or the stairways lined with Alaskan marble—make the place feel less like a regular old DoubleTree and more like an independent boutique hotel. Which it is. Plus free cookies.

Amanda Knox spent four years locked up in an Italian prison for a crime she says she didn't commit and yesterday, an Italian appeals court agreed with her, overturning her conviction and setting her free.

While international media converged upon a courthouse in Perugia, back in Knox's hometown of Seattle, friends, family members and even more members of the media gathered in a hotel suite at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel to first, watch the verdict and then later, celebrate.

The NY Times reports:

On Monday at the hotel, her supporters held hands in anticipation of the verdict, switching between CNN and Fox News. Next to the large, flat-screen television were framed photographs of Ms. Knox, Mr. Sollecito and Ms. Kercher.

Ms. Knox’s supporters were outnumbered by journalists, who had to show identification before entering the suite. The hotel also heightened security by posting a guard outside the rooms....

In an adjacent room, Susan Rosales, a member of the Friends of Amanda Knox, sat on an unmade bed as she read aloud Ms. Knox’s 10-minute statement to the jury.

More Falling Glass From a Hotel, This Time at The Four Seasons Seattle

Just when we thought the falling glass trend was behind us, some windows have shattered again, this time at the Four Seasons Seattle on Sunday. And much like what happened with the W Austin the loose window panes were actually from the residences that are attached to the hotel. But what's worse here is that this is the third time windows have fallen from the building since July.

Thankfully, no one's been hurt or injured but the glass has cracked the glass awning at the entrance of the hotel and a car was slightly damaged.

Needless to say the hotel has finally gotten the idea that all 300 of the tempered-glass windows need to be replaced. The hotel's GM told the Seattle Times:

While we were on assignment checking out Air New Zealand’s new 777-300ER in Seattle right before Christmas, we stayed for two nights at the W Seattle.

As you’ll see from the photo gallery and video walk-through we’ve included here, we found that very much like Grunge, this hotel’s best days might just be behind it.

Hey Drew, we've got our eye on you

Being shallow and all, there’s nothing we like more than staying at a celeb-filled hotel, and staying in a celeb’s room? That really tips us over the US Weekly edge.

So we could barely contain our excitement when we arrived at the Ace Seattle on Monday only for the guy at check in to tell us casually: “You just missed Drew Barrymore.” And when he went on to say we were staying in the room she’d been in the night before, we nearly swooned all the way down the staircase.

And if you’ve stayed at the Ace you’ll know that part of the deal is the supersized, communal soap dispensers that you get in the bathroom. So yes, we shared a shampoo bottle with Drew Barrymore.

Is the WiFi free? Does the gym have good machines? All these things get noticed when checking into a hotel, but what about the atmosphere of the place—specifically the art on the walls or on the floor? All this week, we'll be highlighting properties around the world that do their artwork right, and the specific pieces you should stare long and hard at when next you drop by.

Today: Hotel Max Seattle's guest room doors.

When you check in at the Hotel Max, a boutique hotel which occupies the old Vance Hotel building, you're confronted with art from the very first minute. The lobby is filled with it, as the hotel showcases an impressive collection of some 350 original works of painting and photography, and even the room types have "art" in their names (ex: Solo Art, Queen of Art, Artist King). You're handed your key and you proceed to your room, and there again, you are hit with even more art, since each guest room door at the Hotel Max bares its own unique black and white still photograph.

The fact that every object under the sun seems to get its own National Day can be annoying. But not when it's National S'Mores Day! Held annually on August 10—yep, tomorrow—this is one frivolous national holiday we can get behind.

For anyone on summer vacation, this is a most convenient holiday. It's an excuse to light up the campfire and indulge in as much marshmallow, chocolate and Graham cracker goo as your stomach can handle. But if you're nowhere near a campfire tomorrow, you can always head to the Alexis Hotel in Seattle and join in their S'Mores celebration.

Now, we can't promise that your maid will be dressed like this when you check into the new Maxwell Hotel in Seattle, but this was the scene that greeted Seattle Times travel writer Carol Pucci at the hotel's grand opening party. The Queen Anne hotel officially opens its doors today, but celebrated on the weekend with various lighthearted hotel tableaux (there were also ladies frolicking in the pool).

You may not have an invite to the Oscars this year, but you can still work it down a red carpet at Hotel 1000's big Academy Award bash, sponsored by Seattle Magazine, and have a photo op with a replica Oscar.

As part of the festivities, the Seattle hotel will show a live telecast of the March 7 awards ceremony on big-screen HD TVs. But there will be action off-screen, too, with live performances from Teatro ZinZanni, a local dinner-theater troupe that combines improv comedy, vaudeville, music, dance and cirque.
