Five New Hotels for Zurich Airport, if You Can Wait Til 2017

The Novotel near-ish Zurich Airport
"Airport Hotel" may be dirty words, but thankfully many European cities have understood the need for affordably priced, safe and comfy hotels alongside their international airports. One of the cities lagging behind, however, is Zurich; despite its huge air traveler numbers and popularity with flight crew, its airport-area hotels are loosely located and a surprising few offer free airport shuttles. There's just the Radisson Blu SAS adjacent, with rooms that begin at $255 per night. For an airport hotel. That's Switzerland for you.
Or not. The latest news from Business Traveller gives us major hope for a ZRH future: "Billed as 'the first global location with the ambience of a small town and the synergies of a big city.' The Circle at Zurich Airport will be located adjacent to the airport and will be designed by Japanese architectural firm, Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop."

A Different Sort of Savoy, in Switzerland
To quote Shakespeare, "What's in a name?" Well, a whole lot apparently, if you take the word "Savoy" as a study. What adjectives do you associate with "Savoy?" Something like luxurious, expensive, opulent, exclusive or classic should come to mind, and most of the blame for that goes to London's Savoy Hotel, a grand dame that's reigned over the city and been known throughout the world since it opened in 1889.
Alas, there are other Savoy Hotels, and we happened across another five-star last month in Zurich, Switzerland. The Savoy Baur en Ville is a good option for the city, with free WiFi and an awesome location right off the main Bahnhofstrasse.
It's not affiliated with the Savoy of London; it's just another hotel that borrows the historic name and makes it work. Luckily this one can get away with it; the Savoy Baur en Ville rooms begin at 400 CHF ($432) per night for a single, or 690 CHF ($746) for a king-size bed. We're quite sure you can find rooms at London's original Savoy for less! But then again, this is Zurich, banking capital of the world and whatnot.

Enjoying The Views In The Baur Au Lac Hotel's Magazine
iPads, be damned, we're loving our stroll through print land and our ongoing look at a dying hotel amenity--The Hotel Magazine. Sure, most hotels stock their guestrooms with the trendy magazines of the day or at least place some localized publication on the desks but there are actually a few hotels out there that still publish their own magazine. We've got our hands on a few copies of these rare breeds and we'll be documenting our finds for you here. Know of a hotel magazine we should see before it goes out of print? Send it to us!
Most of the Hotel Magazines we’ve reviewed recently have been brand-wide publications but not the hefty, glossy Baur Au Lac Views magazine. All 144 pages of this fancy publication are for the reading pleasure of guests staying at the ultra-swish Baur Au Lac in Zurich.
Its $50m renovation is now complete, and the hotel—and its magazine—is keen to strut about and show it off.

The Ultimate Swiss Drink: Baur Au Lac's Swisstini

We've kicked off our Summer Cocktails series where we profile fun new summer drinks that hotels are making. Got one we should know about? Send us the recipe with a photo of the drink. Otherwise, enjoy and @reply us when you're wasted!
Zurich's fancy Baur Au Lac has just got its $50m renovations done, and has decided to celebrate with a special end-of-summer cocktail called the Swisstini.
This is one delicious-sounding drink which mixes crème de framboise and raspberry puree with vodka – and has a fantastic Swiss touch by using pieces of white chocolate (Swiss, of course) to make the Swiss flag on top. You can get it for 18 Swiss francs (about $16) at the Terrasse rooftop bar, which means you sip away while looking over Lake Zurich.
The folks at Baur Au Lac are generous enough to suggest recreating the cocktail in your own home if you can't make it all the way to Zurich, or can't afford the starting-at-$750 room rates, but we think it won't taste quite the same outside Switzerland.

Baur Au Lac's Refurb Makes Zurich Even Swisher
Zurich: it’s properly smoking at the moment. Not only was it voted the world’s most livable city last month, and not only have the likes of Cyndi Lauper and Mick Hucknall just been playing the Dolder Grand’s mini festival. Now, the uber-posh Baur au Lac back in town is about to complete a $50m renovation.
The restaurant which only used to be open in the summer will now be taking orders all year round, 32 rooms have been expanded into 22 suites, junior suites and deluxe rooms, and they’ve thrown in a rooftop patio looking over the lake for good measure.
Fixtures-wise, all rooms now have flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations and WiFi book a suite, and you’ll get a Bose sound system thrown into the mix as well. As well you’d hope, given that doubles start at $756, and junior suites $967. Let’s just hope the WiFi's free, yeah?

Get Three Nights For Two At The Dolder Grand

Switzerland – there’s more to it than cuckoo clocks and snow, don’t you know? Or perhaps, maybe you don't know and that's presumably why The Dolder Grand is piquing your interest in its lovely country by offering three nights for the price of two on stays before 31 October.
It’s called their Summer Saver Package, and means you can get three nights in a double superior room for 1740 CHF (£988 or $1618). Yes it’s a lot, but think how much you’re saving.
Also, true fact – last week, Zurich, which the hotel overlooks, was voted the most liveable city in the world last week by Monocle magazine. Just in case the free night wasn’t doing for you.

Plush Digs for Dolder Grand's 'Live at Sunset' Festival
Summer's here, Europe's calling, and it's music festival season. But the downside to festivals is all that grubby camping. Obviously the folks at the Dolder Grand outside of Zurich feel the same way, because they're offering up some decent digs for Dolder's very own Live at Sunset Festival from July 8-19 this year.
True, they're probably aiming for a different kind of clientele from the usual festy types – they've got Jamie Cullum (July 18th), Katie Melua (19th) and Simply Red (9th) on the festival books. But we're thinking the Cyndi Lauper gig on the 17th would make a pretty fine girly break.
There are two festival packages to choose from. The Live at Sunset Festival deal gives you a deluxe room, a three course dinner, breakfast and one gig, and costs from £293 ($443) per person. Money to burn? Book the Live at Sunset Superstar package and they'll give you all that, but stick you in a superior suite, and throw in a massage and a late checkout. But you'll have to fork out £812 ($1,230) each.
Still, who wouldn't want to pay £812 to see Mick Hucknall, right? To book, email reservations@thedoldergrand.com or call +41 44 456 60000.

Giant Easter Egg on Display at The Dolder Grand
The Dolder Grand in Zurich is known to do things up big, like their opening party featuring Mary J. Blige and their Grand 100 Suite inspired by the Rolling Stones. So why should Easter be any different?
The hotel has constructed a giant Easter egg made out of 16,834 Chrysanthemums, standing over 8 feet tall and weighing over 2,200 lbs.
Now, if only someone could make an Easter egg out of that much chocolate for us.

Dolder Grand Is Giving You Half Price Rooms For Its Birthday

It's almost a year since Zurich's fancy Dolder Grand Hotel had its grand reopening, so it's doing what any good marketing-minded hotel should: having an Anniversary Special.
The Anniversary Delight: Be Our Guest package, apart from having a somewhat less-than-snappy name, is actually a good deal. Basically, it's a pay-for-one-night, get-one-night-free deal valid for up to an eight night stay (for the price of four). Given that a double room for one night usually costs you a not-too-measly 870 Swiss francs ($740), getting two for one will make it affordable (we use that term loosely) for a few extra guests.
This offer is valid during their anniversary month, which means from April 3 to April 30, 2009. It's as good a time as any to try out the Dolder's snail showers or get a peek at their Rolling Stones-inspired suite.

Radisson SAS Zurich Has Europe's Tallest Wine Tower

We are pretty easily impressed by anything that's a world's biggest or world's tallest, and so it's no wonder that the Radisson SAS Zurich Airport has caught our eye. It's got Europe's tallest wine tower.
Like we said, we're easily impressed, but then we had to stop and wonder what a wine tower actually is. If you're a touch ignorant like us, we can now enlighten you: this wine tower is a tall glass structure where wine is stored, like this picture of a similar Radisson SAS wine tower at Stansted Airport near London. Apparently the tower includes a system to keep wines at exactly the right temperatures.

Sweet Suite :: Dolder Grand's Suite 100 Inspired by The Rolling Stones

The hits keep on coming for the Dolder Grand Hotel in Switzerland.
Aside from having a mega-opening day, techno-funky spiral showers and a performance by Mary J. Blige, the hotel has just unveiled its four Top Suites, one of which was inspired by the Rolling Stones.
Called Suite 100, after The 100 Club in London, the suite is surely to make any rocker happy.
Also located on the top floor of the Spa Wing, the most surprising feature of the one-bedroom Suite 100 (1,770 square feet) is its unconventional extravagance.
The mood of the interior is set by retro-style furniture and a predominantly black and pink décor reminiscent of the "Swinging Sixties."
A highlight of the suite is the spacious black marble bathroom with a whirlpool, sauna and steam shower beneath a cracked mirror ceiling. The living room features rosewood panelling, and two unique pink DeSede sofas - the same model that Mick Jagger once owned.
