There’s nothing like another ashcloud on the horizon stamping on our flight prospects to get us thinking about a trip to Europe. Specifically, England. And this afternoon, specifically Devon.

Yes, we know Cornwall’s where it’s meant to be at for summer hols by the seaside, but an email plopped into our inbox today about The Cary Arms in Babbacombe, near Torquay, Devon, and the pictures of a man in a wetsuit holding a glass of champagne those lovely rooms had us sold already.

The Cary Arms subtitles itself The Inn on the Beach, which is a pretty apposite name, from the pictures. It also labels itself the Riviera Reborn, to which we say, let's hope so. Because they aren't talking about the sexy French Riviera, they're talking about the South Devon Riviera, whic used to be popular before flying to the sun in Europe got popular. It was also where Fawlty Towers was set, so go figure.

Special Services from a Special Torquay Hotel

Where: Daddyhole Road, Torquay, United Kingdom, TQ1 2ED
December 11, 2006 at 9:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

Plenty of hotels offer special services these days to try and attract the guests: aromatherapy candles in rooms, the latest workout equipment or complimentary city tours. But what they really need to offer is room doors that sleepwalkers just can't open. At least, that's what a guest of the Rutland Hotel in Torquay, England, is now thinking.

While the other guests of the small two-star slept soundly after their days near the ocean, one man spent the small hours wandering the hotel lobby before waking from his sleepwalk at 3am, and finding himself nearly naked (just a vest on top!) in the empty hotel lobby, unable to return to his room. What makes it worse is that he also wasn't wearing his glasses and his bad vision made the only alternative to dial the emergency number on the lobby phone. Devon police said:

Normally we use our priority crime car for slightly more urgent calls. But on this occasion we were happy to help the gentleman in his moment of need.

And the man himself has promised to sleep in a full set of pyjamas in the future. So choose your hotel carefully based on what facilities it offers sleepwalkers, and dress well. You've been warned.

Knights who say Ni birthplace for sale

Where: Asheldon Road, Torquay, Devon, United Kingdom, TQ1 2QS

[UPDATE: Hotel Gleneagles just sold to a group of "big comedy fans" for round £1.5m. Hmm...we smell a theme hotel a comin'. Thanks to our friends at NewYorkology for the tip.]

The Hotel Gleneagles, in Torquay, Devon, which inspired John Cleese to create the hit BBC comedy series Fawlty Towers is on the market for more than £1.5million.

It is where John Cleese stayed while filming Monty Python's Flying Circus in the 1970s. The hotels eccentric owner supposedly gave Cleese the idea for the show.

No word on whether any of the Knights of Ni go along with this sale, but we do know that Monty Python Ni plush dolls are also for sale, separate from the hotel, of course.

Thanks to NewYorkology for the tip.

Note: Currently we can't find the URL for the Hotel Gleneagles official website, if any knows it or finds it, let us know.
