If you mention your upcoming Canary Island vacation to a Brit, that Brit is bound to chuckle.

It is kind of like saying you are going to Daytona, FL.

However, times they are a changin', and over the past couple of years the Canaries have been transforming themselves from a bunch of tacky, cheap, islands to a destination hotel hot spot.

Case in point:

The newly opened Abama where non other than Bill Clinton stayed and played a round of golf back in July.

Located in Guia de Isora, this Moorish styled hotel is surrounded by banana plantations on one side, and the Atlantic on the other.

The designer is the renowned architect, Melvin Villarroel, famous for fusing vegetation into his projects.

When I am designing, I think of plants as bricks, pieces of wood or tiles... The basis of my architecture is composed of a permanent part, which is the building itself, and mobile part, which is the gardens.

Could the Canaries be becoming relevant?
