America Does Indeed Look Grand From the Grand America SLC

We are suckers for a room with a killer view.  We find that we are even more likely to forgive some minor hotel inconveniences if we can stare out the window at something pretty--yeah we are that shallow. Let's help out our fellow hotel mavens by uploading rooms with killer views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. We will feature our favorites in this space from time to time. Remember to tell us the name of the hotel and the room number of the hot view.

We had an anti-view in Denver today — a destination where one might expect to see mountains off in the distance (though Denver, we know, is pretty flat) — but looking at this view from a room at the Grand America sort of makes up for it.

This downtown Salt Lake City hotel has a whopping 775 guestrooms, lots of them with killer Rocky Mountain Views like this one. The place is a 5-diamond property — but still keeps it real with free in-room WiFi. It's got a massive spa, a salon, boasts an impressive list of green initiatives, and, in the winter, offers ski-for-free packages (staying two consecutive nights earns you two Snowbasin lift tickets).

Rates here start around $229, with options to add luxe goodies like afternoon tea, bouquets of flowers, or a spa sampler for additional fees.

Ivanka Trump Sleeps at the Quality Inn

Ivanka Trump might be plugging all of her father's monstrous luxury hotels all over the world, but when her flight got cancelled in Salt Lake City, she humbly spent the night at the Quality Inn. Page Six reports:

Meanwhile, she flew commercial to Aspen last weekend for the Annual Food & Wine Classic, but had an unexpected one-night layover in Salt Lake City due to storms. She slept at the Quality Inn and ate at Little Caesars for dinner with her $18 stipend from the airline.

We're impressed that Ivanka spent the night in an airport hotel where the rooms are badly in need of an upgrade, so say TripAdvisor reviewers. But Little Caesar's? That's pushing it.

Room With an Anti-View: Construction Site Vistas from Salt Lake City Marriott

You know the scene. You open the door to your brand new hotel room, run over to the window, open the blinds and bam, you are hit with the anti-view. Maybe you are looking down a dirty alley, witnessing a drug deal, staring at an air shaft in the face, or seeing a brick wall. Whatever you are viewing it is not extremely pleasurable. Help out your fellow hotel mavens by uploading your anti-views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. Remember to tell us the name of the hotel and the room number with the not-so-easy-on-the-eyes view.

Just a few weeks back we ran a story on how the Marriott should pay more attention to its Salt Lake City hotel. This week, Flickr pool contributor Suze07 can confirm that, with this picture of the view from the Marriott Salt Lake City Downtown.

We hate construction work at the best of the times, although we realize that without it, we'll never see a new or improved hotel or any other kind f building, for that matter. But why do they have to do it outside the hotel rooms of innocent people who've paid good money for the room?

We reckon people should get paid to stay in rooms with views like this, not the other way round. You can get doubles at this Marriott for $99 a night, but there's no talk of a bad view discount (yet).

Marriott Needs to Pay More Attention to Salt Lake Property

The Marriott Hotel in the Mormon stronghold of Salt Lake City was a disappointment to one hotel maven, Suze07. Here's what she says:

I was disappointed in this Marriott. Having stayed at various Marriott Hotels throughout the world, I expected more. Sure, it was clean and the employees were nice, but it was shabby. You can tell this was once a lovely hotel, but it needs an overhaul - badly.

I wish we would have stayed at the Hotel Monaco!!

Given that the Marriott family is of the Mormon faith, we think they should spruce this place up. You know, in the spirit of WWJD? Also, we think it's safe to say that one of Ian Schrager's Schrager Hotel by Marriott probably won't pop up here.

Where to Stay in Salt Lake City

November 17, 2005 at 10:03 AM | by Jolie | 0 Comments

Should you find yourself in Utah (skiing, Mormon convention, whatever; we don't judge), you'll need a place to stay--one that ideally embraces local culture and alcohol. The New York Times is up to the task, rounding up a few noteworthy hotels for the next time you're in crazy ol' Salt Lake City. Hotel Monaco, which was originally built as a bank in 1924 and offers free shoulder massages and wine in the lobby every afternoon between 5 and 6 pm. As usual with Kimpton properties, guests can also bring their pets, and if you don't have a pet the Monaco will leave a living animal in your care for the duration of your stay--if you choose. Rooms start at $109 on weekends, $179 during the week.

Other noteworthy hotels: the Grand America Hotel, which was recently renovated for the 2002 Winter Olympics and features bedrooms with mountain views and Carrara marble bathrooms (from $219 on weekends, $259 during the week), and the Parrish Place Bed & Breakfast (rooms from $89), a small B&B built in 1890 by famous Mormon (and polygamist) George Cannon, who possibly lived there with two of his three wives.

Well, if it was good enough for them...
