We like a mod new hotel with the best of ’em, but even we can’t deny that there’s something sweetly nostalgic about being lulled to sleep by the soft rumbling of a passing train. But when that soft rumble is actually more of a loud roar that keeps you up all night, well, the retro factor is only so strong.

The New York Times shares the sentiment, having recently checked in to the Rhinecliff in Hudson Valley. The Rhinecliff was originally designed in 1854 as a stopover for travelers riding the Kingston ferry and the Hudson River Railroad.

These days, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and this summer reopened as a hotel after a five-year, $5 million restoration, located a two-minute walk from an Amtrak station--a feature that’s convenient, to be sure, but also comes with noisy consequences.
