Last time we checked in at what might just be the best place to stay in Australia, the luxurious and exclusive Qualia resort on Hamilton Island, off the Queensland coast, they were due to open up any day. Now Qualia has been running a few months we thought we should check in on how the luxury's actually turned out.

And the answer is: from all accounts, very, very good. A recent write-up in The Australian from Susan Kurosawa, one of Australia's most well-known travel writers, was full of praise. And that's despite the fact that some of the resort is still under construction--she said that this has been so well-managed, you never feel like you're staying somewhere that's not finished.

Tuesdays (or Saturdays) With Murray at the Mountvista Hotel

The Mountvista Boutique Hotel is the #1 popular pick on TripAdvisor, most likely for their much-touted individualized service and guest treatment. Guests have been more than pleased with Murray and Tania and all other "kiwi staff" at the Mountvista for their warm and friendly attitude.

In the rooms you'll find "Jetstream Internet" and a modest 21" TV, deep spa bath and shower, soundproof rooms, and New Zealand wool carpet (hopefully you're not allergic). But the true highlight at the Mountvista remains the service. It has been said that nothing is too big a request for Murray and his staff. And before you even get there, Murray might even already know who you are and what you do, as one recent business guest discovered:

The staff at Mount Vista is what makes this place extra special. Owner-operated they'd taken the time to impressively learn the faces and names of all the directors (via the firm's website!) and wives as well. Upon arrival they came out to the bus to welcome everyone; and a point was made of farewelling us all too! This level of attention was not over the top, but pleasant and warm - and something I've never experienced at larger hotels.

The last draw in making the service go above and beyond is the wine & canapé hours. Yep, free New Zealand wine and tasty canapés are available for guests to ooh and ahh over from 6-7pm.
