After giving you more Thompson Hotel Toronto than you ever thought you could want, we decided to expand our Canadian horizons, and found a dose of stylish design up in Quebec City. Hotel Pur opened last year and is now introducing its new restaurant, Table.

Like the rest of the hotel, Table is designed to look at home in the pages of design-porn magazines like Dwell and Wallpaper, and will be serving small plates for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Hotel Dominion Takes Care of You After a Night on the Town

For some reason, Quebec City was always high on our Spring Break destinations list. It's certainly not warm in March, and it's not exactly sun-drenched but it just seems so cool. The fact that we'd be spending Canadian instead of Euros always held a little cachet, too. If we ever get around to taking a Spring Break, we might check out the Hotel Dominion 1912, in the heart of the city.

What makes the Dominion such a winner for Spring Breakers?

The rooms are large and the really comfy bed was king sized- the little extras like coffee machine, Bosch music system, well stocked mini bar, (Tylenol- great idea for a weary traveller - we aren't allowed to do that in Australia!), and the Aveda products. Really nice decor, both in rooms and in the bar/fireplace area.

There's nothing like the hair of the dog for the day after. (Not that we'd recommend gobbling Tylenol, but hey, we wouldn't recommend a lot of the stuff that happens on Spring Break.) Once we're back on our feet, you'll find us in the lobby, curled up in front of the fire.

While we've covered the Ice Hotel before, we've never seen extensive photos like these from Flickr.

We can't help but wonder...can you get a hot shower there?

Ice Hotel's Musical Act

January 6, 2006 at 2:35 PM | by | Comments (0)

Canada's Ice Hotel is gearing up for it's 6th season of frosty wonder.  It started with ice sculptures, and then Absolute, and now the Ice Hotel is adding a musical group to it's affiliate list.

The Ice Hotel's grand opening will be January 19, and will feature a live performance of their "official" musical act, internationally acclaimed Water on Mars. The Ice Hotel's CEO Jacques Desbois stated

The ambient mood created by WOM's music is a perfect fit for a lounge atmosphere as found in our ABSOLUT Bar.

If making this year's inauguration is out of the question (probably because you didn't make plans back in November) you can still partake in the mood of the Ice hotel... Sensual Confusion, an exclusive version of WOM's single, can be downloaded for FREE in the ABSOLUT Bar section of the Ice Hotel website.

Wake up on a sleeping bag, on a bed of ice, without drinking yourself silly--now that is something to pay cold hard cash for.

Yup, that's right, it is ice hotel season again. Remember ice hotels? Je me souviens. The Québec version, called Ice Hotel Québec, is open from January 6 - April 2, 2006, ice willing.

Travelzoo is pimping a 50% off offer ($99/night) from the Ice Hotel if you stay Sunday-Thursday.

That means, if there is availability, you can head to Carnaval de Québec and spend a night or two in a igloo.

Planet Hoth isn't all cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and dog sledding, though you can participate in all of those fine winter activities.  The Ice Hotel has all the amenities of your run of the mill hip hotel, including DJ nights, an Absolut Ice Bar, hot tubs, fireplaces (don't ask us), and a chapel.  The chapel is up for performing both male-female and same-sex cerimonies.

You must book by November 2.

Those that want to act all cool and use code words can call: 1-877-505-0423 and mention the "Arctic Hare Package".

Oh, yeah, and if you stay at the Ice Hotel, do us all a favor and post some photos will ya?  We are sick of staring at those happy stiffs on the official Ice Hotel web page.

Good news for gay Canadians, and those marrying gay Canadians, and straight couples, and anyone who is in love and wants to celebrate their love on ice. According to Quebec's Ice Hotel , the Ice Hotel Chapel is getting revamped this year and will see a record number of weddings, including its first same-sex ceremonies.

Canada's Ice Hotel is constructed each winter from ice and snow, and melts in the spring. There's something magical about the place that attracts scads of couples looking to get hitched, and this year, gay couples are joining in for the first time.

For more info, and to plan your own ceremony, check out Ice Hotel's Wedding Packages.

Phillip Greenspun spent some time in the great white north, and ran smack into a hotel with a lousy Internet solution.  C'est domagae.  Unfortunately, this type of disregard for quality Internet service at hotels around the world appears to be getting worse.

Here is Phillip's take:

I'm currently at the Loews Le Concorde hotel in Quebec City, a 424-room business hotel recommended by some guys at the airport.  Nearly every aspect of the hotel operation reflects enormous management attention to detail.  Yet when it comes to Internet access they've outsourced it to a company called DataValet, "a trademark of TravelNet Technologies."  These guys try to hit you up for $20/day for a 100Kbps link but when I tried to connect their authentication server was dead.

Ice Hotels: The Price of Cold

In the midst of a pleasant North Eastern late December thaw one must pay homage to the Ice Hotels.  That's right some people will pay over $1,000 to spend three nights in an upscale freezer.  Expedia is featuring the Quebec Ice Hotel on its winter getaway page.  So what is the deal with these high-class igloos?
