Reader Review :: The Hotel Providence is Just Right for a Boutique Hotel Virgin
Every so often we feature a hotel review from one of our readers that we feel should be shared with the rest of you dear hotel guests. These reviews are highlighted because they are timely, about cool hotels in cool places and are relatively level-headed. Think you can submit one just like this? Send it in. Now, we present you with Jaunted contributing editor KJB's review of the Hotel Providence in Rhode Island. Enjoy.

A weekend trip a couple years ago granted me the opportunity to visit the Hotel Providence in Providence, Rhode Island. To be honest, this was my first experience with a boutique hotel, but certainly will not be the last. Located in the heart of the downtown arts and entertainment district, the hotel features all the comforts of home (when the home is that of your rich aunt).

NYLO Breaks Ground in Rhode Island...Finally

It's been a long time coming but NYLO Hotels has finally broken ground on their Warwick, RI location, about two years after first announcing its plans.
Similar to its Plano, Tex. counterpart, the 164-room NYLO Providence will be located in a mixed-use development area called Pontiac Mills.
The community once was home to a bustling textile mill dating back to the mid 1800's with handsome redbrick buildings and mill tower dedicated by Abraham Lincoln. When completed, the revitalized, master planned Pontiac Mills will house an eclectic mix of restaurants, residences, businesses and boutiques.
The five-story NYLO hotel will complement the development's existing historic architectural design. Conveying the charm of boutique lodgings, NYLO Warwick will be a fit in Pontiac Mills with the hotel's striking redbrick-and-glass construction and residential loft accommodations.
When the place opens sometime in 2008, it will have a lobby/bar hybrid called The Loft which is designed to be the "heartbeat" of each NYLO hotel. Inside the Loft will be a 24-hour, three-meal restaurant, fashionable bar and lounge, a business center, WiFi, a game room, library and a boutique shop. That's a whole lotta stuff to cram in there.

Peter King Rips the Providence Westin

Sports Illustrated columnist Peter King spent a great deal of time in hotels this month, as he followed the NFL playoffs, and he had some harsh words for the Providence Westin.
Those gouging fools at the Providence Westin have really gone and done it now. They are doing everything in their power to steer me to the Biltmore across the street, which I'd have already done if not for the Starwood points. Remember last month when I told you about the $6 health club charge at the Westin? It's one of the very few places on my hotel list that charges for using the health club. In fact, I haven't had a single health club charge from another hotel all season.
The new year has rung in a new tune on the Providence Westin cash registers. It's now $10 to use the health club.
I hope 10 people read this and say: I'm not paying that absurd fee to run on a treadmill for a half hour. And I hope they book their stay elsewhere in downtown Providence. Which, by the way, is one of the underrated cities in America.

Somewhere a Stoner is Weeping
Acutally, stoners and pot-smokers everywhere are probably weeping.
Employees at the Holiday Inn in downtown Providence, RI, discovered a suitcase full of marijuana underneath a bed.
They then called the police who said the case "contained six plastic containers of marijuana that varied in size."
The room's registered occupant was listed as a man from Texas. No word yet on whether, or not he was arrested or how he could be so dumb.

Hotel Providence: What Would Peter Griffin Do?

Ok, ok, admit it--you have never given Providence Rhode Island a thought. If you have it is probably because of Rick Pitino, Buddy Cianci, or Peter Griffin. However, if you find yourself in Providence, and you are looking for a place to stay in town, you might want to check out your newest option, Hotel Providence.
Hotel Providence opened this past February, and is still finding its footing in a constantly evolving section of downtown Providence. However, the staff seems to have settled in nicely. The entire staff was consistently friendly and helpful during our one night stay.
The 80 room hotel is independently owned, and is the the only Rhode Island hotel to gain membership to the Small Luxury Hotels association.. As soon as you step foot in the lobby you will notice the hotels prominent antique design theme. Seriously, from lobby to rooms, this place looks straight out of "Anique Roadshow". The antiques were hand selected from hotelier Stanley Weiss's own collection.
