Hotel Safe Crime Wave Targets Italian Resorts, Saudi Princess

August 10, 2009 at 12:04 PM | by JetSetCD | 4 Comments

Watch you put in your hotel room safe in Italy this summer as a wave of high-profile robberies have taken place, with one becoming a diplomatic incident.

This weekend, an unidentified Saudi princess—perhaps the same who defaulted on all those shopping bills in London—had 15.6 million dollars worth of jewelry stolen from her hotel room safe. They actually took the whole safe, as it was only affixed to the wall with silicon, and they managed to do it in a period of ten minutes while everyone was at dinner.

Although the hotel has been identified as the Colonna Hotel in Porto Cervo, one of the many Iti Resorts on Sardinia's Costa Smeralda, we'd continue to be careful as this seems to be not only an inside job (they used a master key), but also a crime wave.

Craig David and Donna Summer Bring 'Hot Stuff' To Cala di Volpe

Be still, our beating hearts. You know how Craig David’s been off the scene for what seems like eons? Well he’s coming back in style — by hitting Sardinia to sing his little heart out this summer.

Not just him, either; the posh Hotel Cala di Volpe on the Costa Smeralda is also throwing a concert with Donna Summer on July 25 (Craig’s is on August 13, by the way).

It sounds like a pretty fly setting: around the biggest outdoor seawater pool in Europe, overlooking the sea itself. Starwood, who own the hotel, is calling the summer series “a soundtrack exuding dynamic energy and cool”. Sounds like hot stuff ; we’re telling ourselves we were born to do it (sorry).

Rates here start around 315 EUR (440ish USD) — but they can get pricey; we've seen the same standard room up around 1,110 EUR.

Don’t know where Costa Smeralda is? Neither did we...till we looked it up on Google Maps. Turns out this erstwhile jetsetter haven turned-sun-bleached has been is in Sardinia, that unspoiled jewel of Mediterranean leisure. But this continental cougar is about to get her claws back.

The Porto Cervo Wine Festival in Costa Smeralda is taking place Friday-Sunday, April 24-26, this year, and is being presented by the family of Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Costa Smeralda. The five-star Sheraton Cervo Hotel will be serving as the main venue, and is offering a deal starting at 1197 euros for a double room.

Tara Packs Her Parents In Sardinia

We are all still in mourning the cancelation of Taradise, but in the meantime, we need to celebrate the fact that Tara is still bringing us hotel tips Wednesday nights on E!...for now.

Last night Tara flew her parents to Sardinia and the Reid clan stayed at the Meliá Poltu Quatu.

Yeah, we could go on about the strange interactions between Tara and her parents, or talk about how designer Roberto Cavalli appeared to give Tara a tour of his monster yacht with his pants off, however, out of respect for Tara's breadth of travel knowledge, we will just talk about the hotel she stayed in.

Meliá Poltu Quatu sits right on a marina in Northern Sardinia where you can rent a boat, if you so choose, and though the hotel is not directly on the beach, the property does offer a shuttle to a nearby beach. If you don't want to venture down to the beach you can just hang at the hotel pool and take advantage of the friendly service.

One recent visitor adds:

The area in general is very expensive as it is the Costa Smeralda. 4 euros for a coke but if you are prepared for this and want to live amongst the wealthy for a while it's a great place to be. Staff were attentive and friendly and the hotel has a spacious and calm feel to it.

Be sure to ask for a room overlooking the marina or the pool.
