Aloft Plano Opens Ahead of Schedule

Well, well, well. This almost never happens. A hotel opening ahead of schedule. Unless it's an Aloft Hotel. And guess what? It is.

The Aloft Plano is now open. The hotel officially opened its doors yesterday and room rates are going for $249 tonight. Next Monday, the rate drops down to $179 a night. Still, that seems kinda pricey to us. Wasn't this supposed to be a budget-y brand?

Yet, there's not much else to report since it's an Aloft and we all know what is inside those hotels. While we ponder over who will be invited to the hotel's grand opening party, we can't help but wonder how Aloft is going to do versus the nearby NYLO Hotel which is run by a few former Starwood Hotels execs. Rates at NYLO tonight start at $99. On Monday, the rates go up to $189.

What team are you on? Team Aloft or Team NYLO?

Dear Aloft Plano,

Aloha! Today, a tipster wrote in to tell us that Aloft in Plano, Texas looked like it was nearing completion. Looks like you're shooting for a November 20th opening. Cool! You go, Aloft!

With this in mind, we realize it might be time to start planning the kickass grand opening party -- and we'd like to remind you that it's pretty important to have a celebrity on the guest list. Fortunately for you, we took the liberty of coming up with a few suggestions.

Aloft Plano is More Than a Hole in the Ground

Congrats to Aloft on their French-Canadian firstborn! We're excited for you and all, but you can bet we'll still be keeping a close eye on all the other little buns in Starwood's oven.

So today, we snuck a peek at the Aloft in Plano, TX, slated to open on October 1st. Things seem to be coming along nicely, which is a lovely surprise since we've come to expect delays on every hotel development project ever -- so really, anything more than a hole in the ground would have pleased us. Hey, can you blame us?

While the hotel-to-be's superclose proximity to the monstrous, ugly white Plano water tower may not make for the most gorgeous views, we understand there's not much going on in the way of killer views in Plano, Texas anyway.

We were among the first to bring you a review of the flagship NYLO brand property in Plano, Texas this winter, and now that the hotel has been up and running for almost 6 months, we checked in with our friends at TripAdvisor to see how the property's been doing.

And things are lookin' pretty good! Aside from the same sorts of structural headscratchers we mentioned a few months ago--bathroom doors that leave little to the imagination, for instance-- recent guests have tons of good things to say.

After an interview with NYLO's GM Patrick O'Neil and a room review from Hotel Maven Stranger on a Train, we decided we still couldn't get enough of NYLO Plano, the newest boutique biz travel hotel that opened last month in Texas. So we sent our favorite girl Jenna, who just so happens to be a Plano native, down there to check it out for us. Enjoy.

From a distance, Plano's NYLO property looks right at home among the low-rise office buildings and cute retail plazas splashed across North Dallas' sparkling-new Shops at Legacy area. And it wasn't until we drove up to the property that we saw the funky, urban-chic brick-and-glass exterior--which, by the way, looks even cooler all lit up at night.

Admittedly, we had to drive a lap around the parking lot before we figured out that the bright red door was the front entrance, but we were more than willing to forgive when we were greeted by a cheerful front-desker who seemed totally on top of her game (especially considering she couldn't have had more than like two weeks of experience under her belt).

Find out more about a night at NYLO after the jump.

Best Hotel Opening: NYLO Plano

2007 did not see as many hotel openings as we would have thought, especially in New York City, where most of the expected '07 hotels have been put on hold 'til next year. But one hotel did open on time and seamlessly so, The NYLO Hotel in Plano, Texas.

This hotel is the first of many planned NYLO hotels which will open in similar secondary and tertiary markets like Plano throughout the country. Started by a bunch of former Starwood Hotels execs, NYLO (short for New York Lofts) aims to provide both business and leisure travelers with "high design" at affordable prices.

We spoke with the General Manager of NYLO Plano, Patrick O'Neil who also does double-duty as the Senior VP of operations for the NYLO chain on the eve of the hotel opening and asked him what made NYLO different from the rest. He said:

In the markets that we are competing in, we are going to be able to offer our guests something totally different. Some examples...we run on 50 percent windpower, the only hotel in the area to do so. We also offer 32-inch HDTVs in every room, no other hotel around here does that. And we don't charge for the little things. We have free wireless, the bottled water in the rooms is free and parking is free.

Meanwhile, Starwood's similar competing brands aloft and element hotels have yet to open despite a barrage of press releases announcing expected locations around the world.

Looks like Santa Claus dropped us a present under the HotelChatter review tree....

Last week, NYLO Plano opened and we called out for readers to send in their review and lo and behold, Stranger on a Train heeded our call.

I had to work at my corporate office this weekend so I decided to try the new NYLO Friday since it was just down the street. I booked a Pure Glass Loft King and got the discounted soft opening price.

You can read the full review here but we have taken out the crucial review points for you after the jump.

A HotelChatter Exclusive

The first-ever NYLO Hotel is opening tomorrow in Plano, Texas and we were able to grab some quality phone time with Patrick O'Neil, Senior VP of Operations for NYLO hotels as well as general manager for the NYLO Plano property.

O'Neil is a former Starwood man, having helped launch the Westin brand in Europe. Indeed, most of the partners of NYLO come from Starwood. But when we brought up the mega-chain's new spin-offs, Aloft and Element, O'Neil hardly flinched. NYLO is a "totally different thing," he said.

NYLO Unveils Hotel Uniforms Designed By Project Runway's Daniel Vosovic

NYLO Hotels announced that Project Runway Season 2 runner-up Daniel Vosovic would be designing the brand's hotel uniforms back in July 2006 and at that time, we still thought NYLO was a pipe dream.

But here we are, practically waving goodbye to 2007 and not only do we have a hotel--NYLO Plano will open Dec. 18th--we have several snapshots of the hotel uniforms which  are intended to double as both front desk gear and street wear.

Created for frontline workers and fashionistas, NYLO Wear is an 20-piece collection that aims to flatter its wearers in the hotel as well as in the office and on the street.  The versatile, mix-and-match clothing line includes sweaters, skirts, pants, blouses, shirts, jackets and more.

Each piece features Daniel's signature clean lines and sophisticated styling. From jackets and jumpers to polos and pants, the collection is varied enough for a day in the office or a night out with friends. Starting in December, the casual, fashion-forward apparel will be available for consumers to purchase in the hotel boutique shops and online at www.nylohotels.com.

While we did love Daniel's oh-so-clean and classic lines on Project Runway, we're not quite sure we would want to scoop up these garments for a dinner party. However, if we did work at NYLO, meeting friends for dinner after our shift wouldn't necessarily require a wardrobe change. And who can resist naughty schoolgirl knee-highs?

More hotel fashion after the jump.

The Type of NYLO Rooms You Can Book

When we looked at the new NYLO website yesterday we were intrigued by some of the room descriptions. The all-suite hotel has a standard room called the NYLO Suite but there's also a Pure Suite which we gather is hypo-allergenic and two other room categories--The Glass Pure Loft King and the The Glass Loft King.

NYLO, you have our attention.

NYLO Hotels Relaunches Website, Will Open Dec. 18th

We never thought this day would come. The long-awaited first-ever NYLO Hotel in Plano, Texas has re-launched its website to include a detailed preview of the property, more about the NYLO brand as a whole, career opportunities, even NYLO t-shirts and most importantly, a reservations page.

Naturally we hit up the reservations page and looked at rooms for the night of Dec. 18th. But what we found was that we couldn't actually stay at the hotel until January 7th (at a rate of $279.) When we asked NYLO what was up, the hotel's Senior Vice President of Operations, Patrick O'Neil, replied via email with this explanation:

NYLO Plano is still on track for the grand opening on December 18. For the next few weeks reservations can be made by calling NYLO Plano directly at 972-624-6990. As we get closer to the opening date, the online booking engine will allow for fully automated electronic reservation

Good to know. Wouldn't want NYLO Plano to fall behind a la Six Columbus.
