Where the Spanish Go on Vacation

As the Mediterranean summer gets underway, the Spaniards are planning their August getaways to the coast. An amigo here clued us into one of his favorite places to spend a few nights: Huerta Las Terrazas, a three-bedroom B&B in a private home in Pelayo, a town about an hour and a half from the more popular coastal area of Malaga.
You might be hard pressed to find a coastal hotel more scenic than this, as it borders the Los Alcornocales National Park and offers an uncluttered view over the Strait of Gibraltar and onto Morocco--which leads us to another perk of the hotel: its proximately to Tarifa (about six miles), which offers 35-minute ferry service to the African province.
The three-acre property also offers a garden casita, essentially a private apartment for two, away from the main building and which requires you bring and cook your own food. Our friend cautioned us, however, that rooms are bare bones--no phone, TV or air conditioning--and that one does need a car to get around. Rates for the high season start at $172 at $864 per week for the casita.
