We Predict The Washington School House Hotel Will Soon Have a Waiting List

There's a new hotel opening in Park City later this month but with only 12 guest rooms in the middle of downtown, you can forget about booking it for the Sundance. That said, when the ski season and film festival fervor dies down a bit, the Washington School House will be a cool place to stay.
The hotel is, as its name implies, one of the last original school houses in the United States, originally built in 1889 with quarried limestone. It's even listed on the National Historic Registry. Yet approval was given for a hotel to be created within its original structure and the result is 12 shishi guestrooms with crisp white Pratesi linens on the beds, fancy antique furniture and heated bathroom floors.

Now is Probably a Good Time to Book Your Hotel Room for Sundance
Usually, we aren't talking hotels for the Sundance Film Festival until Santa Claus has made his way down the chimney but we realized now might actually be a good time to book your hotel room.
The festival is happening this year from January 19-29 as always in Park City, Utah. The festival's website is encouraging guests to book through their site and save up to 25 percent off on lodging. The festival is also offering a Best Rate Guarantee meaning if you see a better rate, they promise to match it. And if you book through them, they will give you two free movie vouchers with each room booking.
So what's on offer?
Checking rooms for January 19-25, we found some really good options. There was the Yarrow Resort (one mile from Main Street), a popular spot for after parties and meetings and such, at $489 a night. The Sky Lodge on Main Street was open too but at an eye-watering $1,700 a night. That's because it's the official hotel of the festival. But hey, availability is availability right? And we can't forget about their waterfall bathtubs.

Like It's Raining from the Ceiling: Sky Lodge Park City’s Waterfall Bathtubs
While hanging out in Park City this week, we spent a few nights right in the heart of town at the The Sky Lodge and got the chance to luxuriate in one of their freestanding waterfall bathtubs...and you know how we love a good bathtub.

Game On! Inside Daly’s Pub & Rec at Montage Deer Valley
We reported on the opening of the deluxe Montage Deer Valley in Park City back in December, and since then we’ve told you why it’s on of the best ski-in ski-out hotels in the country, but we actually paid the mountaintop retreat a summer visit to try out activities like mountain biking, hiking, archery on the Grand Lawn, and chillaxing at the sprawling spa. However, thanks to a veritable cornucopia of bar games and a hearty menu of American classics, one of our favorite features at the hotel had to be its gastropub, Daly’s Pub & Rec.

Ski Bunnies, Pack Your Mink Booties Because The Montage Deer Valley Opens Today

Lookie here! A hotel that opened earlier than expected!
Christmas came early for those of you looking to getaway to Park City as the Montage Deer Valley opens today. Previously, the hotel was expected to open on December 15..
Rates are still very high at $695 a night for this weekend but we've noticed this rate is a special Montage Memories rate which aside from a room includes breakfast daily for two (a $50 credit) and nightly valet parking. Not keen on making Montage Memories? You can opt for the regular rate of $675 a night but that would be foolish as the Memories rate is a better deal.
And yes, the hotel is still sold-out for Sundance.

The Montage Deer Valley to Open on December 15 at $675 a Night

Well it's a Montage Hotel, did you really expect lower room rates?
The Montage Deer Valley has stayed true to its December 2010 opening date and in hitting up the hotel's website today we see that the luxury ski resort in Park City will open on December 15 with rooms starting at $675 a night for a Resort king or two queens.
Prices go up from there but only the view changes as all of the standard rooms start at a generous 600sq.ft. with separate sitting areas, gas fireplaces, deep soaking tubs in the bath and heated floors. A Vista room gives you views of the resort grounds and mountains for $755 a night while the Peak rooms give you panoramic views of the ski slope or valleys for $835 a night.
But once you enter the suite category, that's when the rooms jump to a whopping 1,050-1,200sq.ft. with living and dining areas, fireplaces and 1.75 baths. Those start at $995 a night on December 15.

The Sky Lodge's Bar To Star As Another Bar at Sundance this Sunday

Imagine this room is gold, and that the guy at the bar is Orlando Bloom.
So, Sundance started today. If you’re a movie buff, stalker, fashion publicist, or a member of the paparazzi, you probably knew that. If you don’t happen to be au fait with the Sundance tradition of screenings, glam ski gear, swag, and parties, let us fill you in: it’s all pretence. Even the parties are playing make believe this year. Case in point, Sunday night’s “Funday” party at Park City’s Sky Lodge.

The Sundance Film Festival Might Be 'Over' But Rooms Are Sold-Out

The "casting couch" at the Dakota Mountain Lodge will cost you close to $1,000 a night during Sundance.
The wise famewhore guru that is Perez Hilton has declared the Sundance Film Festival "over" and the festival that has taken its place is now South by Southwest (SXSW).
Nevertheless, celebs and film makers are still headed to Park City for the festival on January 21st. And we got a request from a reader to find a reasonably priced room for Sundance for two people for the first weekend.
Sadly, we don't have great news. As usual, The Park City Marriott, the festival's official hotel, and the popular Yarrow Hotel, are sold-out. And there are now only two hotels that are listed on the film festival's website as having availability:
· Fox Point at Redstone : Rooms start at a steep $439 a night but if you book a rezzie for four nights or longer, your last night is free (will be credited at check-out.)
· Chateau at Silver Lake: Located in Deer Valley but only a few miles from Main Street, rooms are a hefty $599 a night.

Spoiled Ski Bunnies Will Have to Wait Until 2010 for Montage Deer Valley

One of our favorite vacations ever was the "Saints & Sinners" tour of 2006 when we drove from Central Cali to Las Vegas for two nights of indulgence and debauchery. From there, we drove to its polar opposite destination, Southern Utah, and went off the grid, car-camping for a week. Thankfully, we packed enough vino to overcome Utah’s wackadoodle liquor laws.
In a stroke of genius, the fine state of Utah relaxed ‘em slightly this summer, banning the state’s stupid private member club only system after a 40-year run of complete and utter absurdity.
LDS and liquor laws aside, there are few places in the country as naturally stunning as Utah. So, we soaked up every second of leaf-changing beauty when we were in Park City last weekend. We checked out the hotel scene of course, but we thought it was important to let you know this first: construction is moving along a-okay at the Montage Deer Valley and all signs say "yes" for its December opening. As in December 2010.

The Dakota Mountain Lodge Opens at $139 a Night With a Surprisingly Useful Resort Fee

A suite at the Dakota Mountain Lodge.
The Waldorf-Astoria Collection has been snapping up and renovating properties left and right but now the first new hotel has opened, The Dakota Mountain Lodge in super swanky Park City, Utah. Detes on the guestrooms come courtesy of the press release we just got:
Guestrooms are finished with custom designed furniture, natural colors and rich interiors to create a casual yet sophisticated retreat. Available in king or queen rooms, each room is designed with a gas fireplace, 42” HDTV, spacious bath with jetted tubs and/or steam showers, and private patio or balcony. Suites are one-to-four-bedroom, some loft style, and feature large gourmet kitchens with stainless steel appliances and granite countertop.
We headed over to the hotel website right quick and sadly saw that the website was sort of malfunctioning. (It's now working properly.) Thus we called the reservations line at 1-866-279-0843 and the reservations agent gave us a quote of $139 a night for a king bedroom tonight. There's also a $25 resort fee, but this one actually seems to give you something for your money. It includes in-room internet access, free coffee and tea in-room, access to the Golden Door Spa fitness center and group fitness classes, complimentary parking and complimentary ski and golf valet service.

Take the Funicular to St. Regis Deer Crest Resort

We don’t usually think much about ski season in July, except maybe when it’s so hot and sticky that we try the ol’ “think cold” mind trick game to cool down. But we hear the new St. Regis Deer Crest Resort is inching closer to a fall opening, which is exciting enough to convince us to look ahead to ski bunny time.
Just last week, the fancypants Deer Valley resort installed a 500-foot-high funicular — reportedly the first and only at a North American ski resort — to scale the vertical space between the resort’s Snow Park Building at the mountain’s base and the primary hotel building. Flown in from Switzerland, the funicular cabins were installed using a 500-ton crane. And get this: The ride takes just 90 seconds, proffering quick-as-a-flash panoramas of the valley.
St. Regis Deer Crest assures us that it’s “bound to be the most well-appointed mode of transportation at any mountain resort.” We’re sure it will be, considering the resort is Utah’s first five-star branded luxury resort. Lucky for all us non five-star guests, the funicular will be free for guests as well as non-guests. Of course, they’d just love it if you stuck around and explored Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s new J&G Grill, or maybe the 14,000-square-foot Remède Spa, or the 3,000-bottle wine bar.

Still Wanna Go to Sundance? There Are Some Options

Every year when the Sundance Film Festival rolls into Park City, Utah, we get an email from someone within the Marriott Summit Watch on Main Street offering up their time shares for the week. And this year is no different.
Two bedroom villas are available for four nights for a rather good price of $600. These villas can sleep eight people and are located at the base of the Town Lift, right near all the Sundance events.
On site amenities include an indoor/outdoor heated pool, four whirlpool spas, an organized and comprehensive activities program for children and adults, a restaurant, and an exercise facility.
The villas are available from January 16-25. If you're hard up for a Sundance rental, contact Jim Swartz at jswartsr@aol.com.
Outside of timeshares, the popular Stein Erikson Lodge has a room open but it's through Craigslist which can sometimes be an iffy situation. The dates are Jan. 16-19 and price is on request.
The Yarrow Resort, an official Sundance Hotel, has rooms open on the tail-end of the festival from Jan. 21-23 at $229 a night for a deluxe king guestroom. Also available for the same rate is a deluxe double queen room. So if Sundance still matters to you, there is a way to get there.
