The first thing we think about when we arrive at a hotel is promptly plunking down our bags and collapsing onto the bed, our greatest worry being how quickly room service can be delivered. Worry about potential carbon monoxide poisoning? Um, not so much. Granted, the Americana Hotel, located in Ocean City, Maryland, is no Ritz or Le Méridien (observe the stellar pictures above), but there are certain core safety standards that all lodgings must adhere to, and the law agrees.

The Edge: A Design Hotel with a Cheesy Fireplace

Most people think of designer and boutique hotels in New York, L.A., Paris, and London. But don't forget that these babies are popping up like a wild brush fire from New York across Middle America and back again.

This time we find one not far for East Coasters with The Edge, "Maryland's premier design hotel" at Fager Island. Sure it's not summer anymore, but you can cozy up here nevertheless:

We have stayed in some lovely hotels but our room at The Edge ranks amongst our top three for its sheer size (with double height ceilings), the huge four-poster bed, heart-shaped jacuzzi in the corner and balcony hanging directly over the bay. The decor is contemporary and cosy and includes an open wet-room/shower and electric, real-flame fireplace. Just to add to the romantic atmosphere, the turn-down service means that you return to your room to find the place lit with candles and Godiva chocolates left on your pillow.

To add to the cozy mood you can get the fireplace going. However, as one guests gripes, it's an electric one and is "cheesy, not at all like a real fireplace." But we think if you drink enough wine and eat enough Godiva chocolates that this shouldn't really matter anymore.

Now as for the heart-shaped jacuzzi well, that's gonna take something a little stronger than wine.
