We've often complained about the floral duvet phenomenon---how you find a great hotel only to sleep in a bed with an 80s-esque floral duvet. Not exactly a turn-on in our books.

But hotels are making great strides to ditch the floral duvet, even as far north as Ontario. The Daily Globe and Mail of Canada recently reviewed the Shaw Club in Niagra on the Lake. The hotel stepped up to the plate with some major remodeling to get rid of, as the reviewer put it, "quilts and squeaky floorboards".

The hotel's renovations include modern favorites like free WiFi, plasma TVs (in the bathroom as well), an iPod station, 300-thread-count linens, a pillow menu for picky sleepers, a pet goldfish and a CD library for the CD player.

With all these changes, the hotel is attracting city slickers to this countryside getaway that previously they wouldn't have even considered, namely for the floral duvets.

They seem somewhat out of place in NOTL: thirtysomething couples, sans kids, lounging on the Shaw Club restaurant's outdoor patio. This is not to say that the town's bread-and-butter visitors -- baby boomers and retirees -- are in short supply. No -- it's just that the Shaw Club's guests seem more diverse than elsewhere in town.
