Update: Looks like we got this wrong, from a tipster:

The writer, Stephen Jardine, only refers to the Peacock as a token of comparison against the charges levied by an _unnamed_ hotel in Scotland. The Peacock is an old Edinburgh pub that has a reputation for its Fish and Chips. It is a pub albeit a rather pretentious one. There are no rooms.

It still helps to read the above update with a Groundskeeper Willie accent for effect. Thanks for setting us straight.

Stephen Jardine alerts us to the always annoying, yet all to prevalent, expensive hotel not worth its weight in British pounds.

The Scotsman.com writer makes some interesting assessments of the Scottish tourism industry, as he rips apart Ye Old Peacock Inn out in Newhaven.  Here is a quote from his story (please read the following quote with a Groundskeeper Willie accent for effect):

Now this wasn't Gleneagles, Turnberry or somewhere with facilities and service to justify high prices. This was a wooden chalet hotel miles from anywhere with seven-star prices but one-star everything else. The heating wasn't even working. Never mind, no doubt back in the owners' accommodation they are keeping warm by burning tenners provided by mug guests and planning their next holiday on Richard Branson's Necker Island.

Sounds like its time for the hoteliers at the Peacock to pull up their kilts and get to work.
