A-Rod Retreats to Atlantis Bahamas
After Sports Illustrated reported that they'd confirmed Yankees baseball star Alex Rodriguez had tested positive for testosterone and anabolic steroids in 2003, A-Rod reacted to the media frenzy (and his new nickname, A-Fraud) by bouncing outta the continental U.S. For him, this was probably a good move: tons of Yankee fans and would-be A-Rod supporters are out for blood now that the baseball hero has been ratted out. But instead of sitting quietly and thinking about what he's done (and thinking of ways to apologize to disappointed fans), he's been partying it up at the Atlantis Bahamas.
New York Daily News reports that he checked into a two-bedroom suite in the Cove section of the hotel reportedly $15,450 a night and spent the evening getting his drank on in the VIP area at Aura nightclub in the hotel. Per NYDN:
Grey Goose vodka, A-Rod's liquor of choice, goes for $425 a bottle in the VIP areas. Hotel staff said A-Rod partied so hard Saturday night that he slept late into the day Sunday before eating and leaving.
The butler in A-Rod's suite told reporters that he had gone to a Grammy party for the evening and was not expected back at the hotel Sunday night.
Eh, he was probably knocking back those Grey Goose and Red Bull cocktails to celebrate the fact that someone would still let him into a VIP area at all.

Room With a Killer View: Looking Out of Club Level at The Cove, Atlantis
We are suckers for a room with a killer view. We find that we are even more likely to forgive some minor hotel inconveniences if we can stare out the window at something pretty--yeah we are that shallow. Let's help out our fellow hotel mavens by uploading rooms with killer views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. We will feature our favorites in this space from time to time. Remember to tell us the name of the hotel and the room number of the hot view.

Thanks go to jyanich for dropping this killer view into the HotelChatter Flickr pool. The view belongs to the The Cove Atlantis in the Bahamas. It's a paradise kind of picture looking the other direction to this video, and shot from higher up--from the Club Level, in fact. A couple of perfect pools to dive into, a really inviting-looking ocean--that's pretty much enough to satisfy us any time.
If you want your own piece of this paradise, The Cove is running a Paradise Getaway special at the moment starting at $899 for 4 days/3 nights per person; although if you click through to reserve the special, you'll see that it's not available on too many dates in the near future. But if you get there, you can be fairly sure to have a pretty special view, at least.

CNN Suits 'Partying It Up' At the Atlantis Beach Resort

Page Six has a dishy item today about the suits at CNN who were spotted partying like its 1999 at the Atlantis Beach Resort in the Bahamas.
According to FTVLive.com, Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide, and Jon Klein, president of CNN/U.S. were among the 100 CNN execs who got to go on vacation this week on the company dime. And that dime must go a long way as rooms at the Atlantis, which has an onsite casino, a Nobu restaurant, nearly 6,000 rooms and an open-air marine life habitat, can hit up to $10,000 for a week.
Naturally, this has the employees stuck in Atlanta pissed, especially since most of them won't be getting bonuses this year.
While we are sure, no one would pass up a free trip to Atlantis, this is still supreme, big-resort cheesiness. One example? Reality TV couple Rob and Amber from Survivor got married here. Another example? The Aquaventure water park, bound to be filled with children.(See picture above.)

Hurricane Katrina Hotel Update: Dolphins Bunk at Atlantis
[Ed. Note: Hurricane Katrina was beyond devastating for the residents Louisiana and Mississippi. Lives were turned upside down, forcing many residents to find new homes in shelters or hotels. In New Orleans, however, many hotels are anxious to displace the evacuees to make room for the tourists visiting for Mardi Gras. Fortunately a judge just ruled that the evacuees could stay until Mar. 1. This just shows that even four months later, Hurricane Katrina continues to have repercussions. This week, we are posting stories involving hotels and Hurricane Katrina, giving an update on how things seem to be progressing. Enjoy.]
Hurricane Katrina turned the lives of animals who were living in its in path of destruction upside down as well.
Take the case of 16 dolphins from the Marine Life Oceanarium in Gulfport, Miss. which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
Before the storm, the younger dolphins were moved to hotel swimming pools inland. During the storm, eight were pulled out to sea when their Oceanarium tank was destroyed, but were rescued within a week.
Since the storm, the dolphins had been staying at various marine life rescue centers. Then last week, the dolphins were sent to live in seven interconnected resident pools within The Atlantis Resort in Paradise Island, Bahamas.
The resort's 34-acre waterscape -- filled with 11 million gallons of fresh and saltwater, 11 exhibit lagoons and over 50,000 sea creatures -- will also get 24 sea lions, and 22 exotice birds from the Marine Life park.
With the loss of crucial guest information, the hotel has not been so lucky.
Maybe these new guests will boost their spirits.

Atlantis Loses Important Info
In what appears to be a disturbing trend, the Atlantis Resort in Paradise Island in the Bahamas is reporting that personal information belong to nearly 55,000 customers have been stolen from the resort's databases.
The stolen information includes names, addresses, credit card details, social security numbers, drivers license numbers and bank account data, according to a filing with the Bahamas Securities and Exchange Commission.
Atlantis is notifying affected customers and offering them a free credit monitoring service for one year.
Not surprisingly, the resort tried to bury this item on their news page, listing it last and after a news item from November. We only hope they will boost up their data protection as a result of this.

$99 Atlantis Deal-ee-o

Ok, at its core Atlantis is a family destination--Six water slides and 11 pools. However, they are trying damn hard to make sure sun starved folks of every age enjoy their little "Island Disney."
How does Atlantis satisfy adults of all ages? A giant casino, of course. Furthermore they have a bunch of bars, restaurants, and a big open-air marine habitat.
Travelzoo is squawking about a $99/night fall special good for Sunday-Wednesday stays November 8 - December 25 if you book by November 16.
The weather is turning cold here in the Northeast and we wouldn't kick a quick trip to Atlantis out of bed.
If you are prepared to walk, and don't mind being confined to a resort style vacation--after all what's wrong with that? Atlantis is a quick jaunt from the East Coast and has enough amenities to keep most fickle East Coasters happy--at least for five days or so.
Michael Jordan and Oprah dig this place, plus reality television's king and queen couple Rob & Am-ba tied the knot here. Um, yeah, we have no idea if that is a good or a bad thing.
