Pack Your Critter Pants And Head to Nantucket for Midweek Deals

In addition to being a painfully cheesy punchline, Nantucket is also a great, but expensive, New England vacation spot. But if you can steal away for some last-minute mid-week beach time, you’ll score lower rates and not have to go to work. Where can we sign up?

One deal in particular grabbed our attention: the Jared Coffin House, which we admit stood out based on its morbid name. No worries, though, it’s named for a 19th-century man with an unfortunate name, not as a warning about wooden boxes as beds.

Anyways, the inn is an historic whaling captain’s mansion near Main Street offering rates that start at $250 July 20-21 and 26-29 (or, if you’re really spontaneous, you might be able to stay tonight for $165). Guests also get 15 percent off breakfast and lunch at White Elephant’s Brant Point Grill and at the inn’s own Harbor Wok for dinner and takeout.

Just make sure you clear your calendar before booking; the Jared Coffin House is rather finicky about their cancellation policy.

Meet The Innkeeper: Nantucket Whaler Guest House

The thing about staying at an inn is sooner or later you are going to bump into the innkeeper. Whether you are a social butterfly or an introvert, when you stay at a small bed and breakfast, or an inn, you need to be prepared for your "innkeeper interaction". Which is why we figured it would be a good idea for you to get to know who runs your inn of choice before you decide to check-in. Meet The Innkeeper is our new video feature where the innkeepers get to speak directly to you, oh so intimidating potential guest, and tell you what their particular inn has to offer.

Today we present to you Randi Ott, from the Nantucket Whaler Guest House. Have specific questions for Randi, or us? Leave them in the comments section below.

More on this Nantucket guest house, including a video room tour, later this week--thanks so much to Randi for taking the time to do this.

Make Sure You Really Want to Stay at Jared Coffin House

In a conversation with an FOHC, (Friend of HotelChatter), we listened to them gripe about their search for a Nantucket hotel to visit, just before Memorial Day.

In any case, they settled on the Jared Coffin House. She was able to get a room in Spring price range of $180, but was shocked to see their cancellation policy (shown above.)

Hotel cancellation policies vary from hotel to hotel. Some give you 24 hours, some give you 14 days. We just think the Coffin's policy is a little harsh, especially because they charge you $25 even if you cancel three weeks before your arrival date. Also, if you have to leave early, you have to pay the full amount of days booked. Then again, at least it's not the Ritz-Carlton.

And we're not saying you won't have a good stay here at the Coffin but just make sure you will actually be there when you say you will.

Veranda House Drops Weird 'No Food' Policy

Go To The Hotel's Web

A while back we checked in on the Veranda House in Nantucket which we thought was a refreshing and modern twist on the island's B&B theme. Meaning, it didn't smell or look like Grandma's house.

But the only downside was that the hotel requested guests to sign a "No Food or Drink" policy once they checked-in which was not only odd but like totally oppressive. Just like Grandma's house.

Luckily we have some good news today. A rep from the Veranda House lets us know:

[A]s of April 2006 the hotel has been under new ownership.  The no food policy has since been abandoned and the breakfasts have been revamped...bathrooms have been completely redesigned and rooms now have flat panel TV/DVD, wireless Internet and phones with voice mail.

So not only are you allowed to bring back Funions and Mountain Dew to your room, you can watch TV and contribute to your favorite internet forums all from the comfort of your bed. Now, what would Grandma think of that?

Shoe Designer Meets Eco-Hotel in Nantucket

More and more eco-hotels are taking off right here in the U.S. so that we don't have to play with monkeys outside our hotel room when we want to stay at an earth-friendly inn.

The new Hotel Green in Nantucket was designed by Vanessa Noel, a shoe designer. Just what does a shoe designer know about the hotel industry? Actually a lot since this is Noel's second hotel in Nantucket.

The first is aptly named the Vanessa Noel Hotel and gets average reviews. But, this is her first stab at the eco-genre. And if you're wondering if there's enough hippies in Nantucket to support this place, then you're in the wrong mind set as Noel tells T+L:

I'm tired of people thinking that organic means hippie," says Vanessa Noel... In the center of town, adjacent to her shoe shop, Hotel Green has an organic restaurant and 10 guest rooms that combine Noel's eye for design with substance: mod chairs made from recycled cardboard sit on jute rugs ("So earth-friendly," she jokes, "you could put them in your garden"); neon Pop-Art prints hang on walls covered with milk-based paints. Even the cleaning products are all-natural.

You won't get much from Hotel Green's website. It's conserving energy or something by simply stating its phone number. But we can tell you that doubles start at $200.

Now we're curious as to the eco-friendly-ness of her shoe collection?

There are Some Benefits to Being Old

July 13, 2006 at 2:46 PM | by Courtney | 0 Comments

People generally never wish to fake being older, but here is a deal that will prompt many to wish to be over 50: a 50 percent reduction at Nantucket Island Resorts for those over 50.

Is this agism? Perhaps not, but those qualifying should definitely take advantage of the deal. Nantucket Resorts encompasses several top notch Inns, including the Jared Coffin House (we really hope they are not implying anything here). National Geographic printed up the deal date details:

From September 4 to October 23, guests who are age 50 or older can take advantage of rates reduced by 50 percent at Nantucket Island Resorts. The "50/50" package is valid at the Jared Coffin House (September 4-December 30; 800 248 22405) starting at $68 per night, the Harbor House Village (September-October 23; 866 325 9300) starting at $85 per night, and the Cottages at the Boat Basin (September 5-October 22; 866 838 9253) starting at $100 per night

All of the resorts provide the quintessential delights of Nantucket: beautiful harbor scenery, great seafood, and New England charm. It will be up to the seniors, those over 50, to get the romance in the picture however, as you'll notice the deal starts at $68.00, one dollar short of a true escape.

Entertaining Various Male Guests is No Problem at the Wauwinet

Staying in Nantucket is not supposed to offer sleek design, hip clubs, and modern décor. It's something you have to realize before booking and take in the old-world charm and royal airs of New England's snooty island.

The New York Post recently checked out the Wauwinet Relais & Chateaux in Nantucket, an Inn built in 1860 with beachfront property and an upscale restaurant.

The hotel is not a cheap one, starting at $460 and requiring a two night minimum. Two people however, are not required and single status was notably not questioned:

I'd reserved a room for two, but arrived solo. No one questioned where my companion was...While in house, I entertained a variety of guests - bringing one male friend to dinner and another to drinks on the same night. No one raised an eyebrow.

After a rude awakening fire alarm, complimentary coffee was brought to the Post guest's room and the maitre d' apologize for the false alarm and inquired if she would be needing coffee for one or two persons.

Although it wasn't mentioned, we assume at this point the maitre d' was desperately trying to catch a glimpse of the scene behind the cracked hotel room. This whole charade of entertaining in rooms, looking the other way, but nonchalantly inquiring about the number of guests in a room, leaves us dizzy with curiosity. The floral duvets and Chinaware teacups don't fool us, the behavior of upper-class New England plays out like the rest of the world...they too, stay in hotels for sex.

If you are like us you totally forgot the show existed, but when we showed up at the Century House and spotted a photo of Innkeeper Gerry with the cast of Wings, it all came together.

If you remember the show you will remember it took place on Nantucket, and of course us bringing this up is apropos of absolutely nothing.

The Century House is another Nantucket Inn located on "Inn Row", convenient to town and the beaches, yet far enough away to get a good nights sleep.

The Inn's location, personality, fresh fruit breakfast, and free WiFi, were enough for us, but as you know, these Nantucket B&B's are filled with stories.
