Green Hotels don’t usually equal sexy hotels – and if they do, you can generally assume that the eco side is more for effect than hardcore environmental causes. But a big exception to the rule has just opened up in Britain: The Scarlet hotel in boho Cornwall.

It may look like just another chic clifftop Cornish hotel with its slinky furnishings (it’s even a member of Design Hotels), Michelin-starred chef, Atlantic views and “private outdoor space” for each of its 37 rooms, but under all the glitz is lurking a seriously green hotel.

Stay a Night, Plant a Tree in Cornwall

The annual Green Apple Awards have been handed round again in Britain. And the Bedruthan Steps hotel in Cornwall, southern England, has won a "Green Champion" award after setting up a nifty scheme in conjunction with carbon offset company co2balance.

So just how do you become a Green Champion? The Bedruthan Steps management team say they have a number of environmental initiatives on the go, and some of these focus on reducing the impact of carbion dioxide emissions.

Recycling of course is a big thing here: you can find recycling bins for papers, cans and bottles throughout the hotel. Solar panels assist in heating the pools (remember this is England, so we can't expect quite enough sunshine to do the job alone); and guests with babies can participate in a scheme where they can use "real" diapers instead of disposables.

But by far the friendliest sounding method is their tree planting system. When you spend a night at the Cornish seaside hotel, you can have a tree planted in their special forest, "to absorb the carbon dioxide produced during [your] travels to the hotel". They've even got plans to buy more land and create the permanent Bedruthan Steps Woods.
