The eight room Balamku Inn on the Beach is located on the little known Costa Maya in Mexico.

The Canadian-hosted hotel is eco-efficient and free of satellite television, analog phones, air conditioning, and yes, even the Internet.  So if you are looking to hide out for a spell, you can do so here.

How far away from civilization is Balamku?

The drive from Cancun is not 3.5 hours as it says on the website-- it actually took us closer to 5 hours, and we ended up arriving well after dark. We hit the last two days of the rainy season, and the dirt road through Mahahual had so many potholes and was so flooded that we worried that the car would stall. The hotel is further down that road than you'd expect, so just be patient-- you can't miss the sign on the left side of the road. The palapas are fantastic. There are plenty of windows, and the breeze off the ocean and the ceiling fan kept the room very cool. The rooms are nicely decorated, and very environmentally friendly. The toilets are water-saving, and the shower is the rainwater that has been collecting on site. Because of this, the water is not really hot, but warm enough to be comfortable.

The ocean is literally 15 feet from your cabaña door and kayaks are readily available.

Rates start at 500 pesos per cabaña, about fifty bucks, and breakfast is included.
