The Hyatt Regency Maui Hatches New 'Happy Feet'

Mondays are hard. So to help kickstart the week, we're going to call today Mai Tai Monday. OK, we're not really drinking before noon, but we are going a bit ga-ga for the baby penguins who hatched recently at the Hyatt Regency Maui. We're not sure if this is Mai or Tai in the photo with his mama, but he sure is cute.
Mai and Tai are African Black-Footed Penguins, and part of the hotel's thriving wildlife habitat. We know, we didn't think penguins were warm-weather creatures either, but this particular species dig the balmy temps of Maui, and we can't say we blame them. We'd take swaying palm trees over frigid ice floes any day.

The Whaler in Hawaii Has a Brand New Look and Brand New Rates

When a resort spends eighteen months doing reconstruction and renovation work, you want it to be obvious that something has changed, and The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach in Hawaii seems to have gotten that bit all figured out: they've plonked a three-tiered fountain in the middle of their lobby so every guest can see that things are different.
Of course, this is not the only renovation or addition that The Whaler has made. Their garden courtyard has been re-landscaped and they've also re-paved the deck around the pool.
The jet spa has had some work done on it too: the way they describe it is "the jet spa was enlarged to better accommodate guests", which makes us a bit unsure about whether it now fits more guests in or it just holds, uh, larger guests. After your spa experience, in any case, you'll be able to lounge around on new poolside furniture.
To celebrate the renos being done, The Whaler has got a special deal happening: From July through to August 23, you can get the Summer Preview Rate which starts from $259 a night for the Garden View studio. Please test the enlarged jet spa for us if you stop by.

Sheraton Maui Gives You Notescast For Your iPod

We love our iPod and we love anything new we get to do with it. Call us suckers for technology, but we actually do think it's cool that the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa has got together a Notescast for iPods.
What that means is you can download a file off their site onto your iPod and bingo, you get a mini-website of information to enjoy whenever you want. The Sheraton's Notescast has got 81 pages of info so you can move around and find out pretty much anything you need to know, and you can make your friends jealous even before you leave by showing them pictures.
Now, skeptics, we see the obvious comment here: why do all this on a tiny iPod screen when there's this whole big internet thing where you can probably get all the same information. The answer: because you can. Reason enough, right?

Room With a Killer View: Palm Trees on Maui
We are suckers for a room with a killer view. We find that we are even more likely to forgive some minor hotel inconveniences if we can stare out the window at something pretty--yeah we are that shallow. Let's help out our fellow hotel mavens by uploading rooms with killer views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. We will feature our favorites in this space from time to time. Remember to tell us the name of the hotel and the room number of the hot view.

It just goes to prove that there's no such thing as too many palm trees, when you stare long and hard at this killer view from the Lahaina Shores Beach Resort in Maui. Because we could stare at this from within our cubicle for hours and hours.
Lahaina Shores is actually a condo-rental place with full resort-style services and amenities including daily maid service, a concierge and internet access (at a price), plus you can use the barbecues poolside to grill up a feast. Rates start at $147 per night for mountain view suites but if you want to look over the palm trees and the sea (we certainly do) then you'll have to pay from $193 a night.

Jocks and Foodies Can Both Be Happy in Maui

Of course you never need a reason to go to Maui, but when you have one it's all the better. The Chicago Tribune points out two reasons at the Kaanapali Resorts. The company is offering two packages that will appeal to either your adventurous side or the foodie that lurks within.
For the action lovers, go to the Kaanapali Beach Resort for the "Maui Adventurer"package which:
Offers one activity for two--a horseback ride on a working cattle ranch, a bike ride down Haleakala, an ATV ride, a waterfall hike or a Molokini snorkel excursion--plus five nights in an ocean-view room, daily breakfast, daily rental car and admission to a dinner show blending Hawaiian dance with magic. Good until Dec. 24, the "Maui Adventurer" is priced at $1,879 for two, with additional nights costing $295, including breakfast and car rental.
If it's the food you're after, you'll have to follow your nose to the sister hotel, The Plantation Inn in Lahaina for the "Island Gourmet package." For $799 you get "three nights, covering lodging, one dinner for two, daily breakfast and daily car rental." Both deals are subject to blackout dates so inquire about that when you are booking. Both also are good through the end of the year. .
As for the Kaanapali Hotel, it was voted "Most Hawaiian Hotel in Hawaii." Perhaps because they keep it "real" by not providing internet.

One Night In Maui

Blogger JellGirl fill us in on her cramped, but stylin' night in Maui over on Fluffy Stuff.
She stayed at the boutique-ish Lahaina Inn.
On arriving, I found a tiny little boutique hotel with a very cosy reception area, manned by one friendly receptionist, who turned out to be the porter, concierge and everything else you can think of as well. The entire hotel is charmingly decorated in a very old style; I loved the flower wallpaper, old sepia portraits of long-gone people, the homey feel of the common room where there was free coffee, tea and a tin of Japanese sweeties out for everyone to help themselves too. The room also housed the only television in the hotel, but when you're on a beautiful tropical island like Maui, you don't need a television.
I just love the old-fashioned feeling of this tiny room. There was hardly any room for me to drag my suitcase from the door to further in the room, but still I wished I could have stayed longer there.

Maui's Secret Resort Bargain Revealed

Yeah, sorry for blowing your cover Napili Bay Resort, however, juliana, HotelChatter's intrepid editor, is thinking of heading to Maui in July, if she can find a hotel bargain that is. Since it isn't like Napili is in the witness protection program or anything, we are singing like a canary.
This little two-story resort is right on Napili's beautiful half-mile white sand beach and comes complete with gorgeous rainbow vistas if you are lucky. There's no air conditioning, and the decor is straight out of Magnum PI, however, for just a shade over $100 a night you get a room, or a condo, with a ceiling fan one one of Maui's better beaches. Hell, even the tired old rich folks staying at the pricey resorts up the road come down to Napili beach to walk and sun.
Furthermore, if you spring for a Napili condo you will get a full kitchen, thus you can hit Safeway, cook your own meals, and save even more money.
See? Maui can be had on the cheap--though probably not for much longer now that we have opened our big mouths.
The web site Aloha Condos has all the pertinent info, just click on The Napili Bay, Maui.
