Design-minded travelers to Hamburg, Germany, will be happy to hear the Radisson Blu Hamburg reopens this week after a 48-million-euro makeover. Claiming the title of Hamburg’s biggest hotel, the hotel has 556 rooms and stands nearly 400 feet tall.

Thanks to the renovation, brand-new features include a 23,000-square-foot conference area/ballroom, freshened-up lobby with two lounges, two restaurants and bars, and a fitness center. Plus, the guestrooms have been re-imagined with individual themes.

The lobby now has white tile floors, black walls, and an under-lit reception area (see photo above — looks pretty good, dontchya think?). Think mod chandelier lighting and gold armchairs alongside Arne Jacobsen Egg chairs. Meanwhile, Swedish architect Christian Lundwall refreshed the guestrooms in three styles: natural (light colors, beechwood furniture); urban (modern aesthetic, oak furniture, Amtico flooring); and mansion (Turkish rugs, rosewood furniture, silver wardrobes). The rooms all have free Wi-Fi (yay!) and some have city views.

The George Hotel in Germany Seems Culturally Confused

Perhaps even more than us, the New York Times sure does like a hotel with a quirky shtick. Last week, they checked in to a London hotel that can’t quite make up its mind between “rough” and “luxury;” this week a Times-er navigated The George, a Hamburg, Germany, hotel all decked out in British décor.

Weird as it may seem, the design hotel's English theme is a reflection of its location. According to the NYT, the port city of Hamburg and its residents "have always had a fascination with its larger and more famous counterpart across the North Sea and up the River Thames." Apparently locals have long partied it up in London instead of Berlin. Guests get a wee bit o’ Britain through touches like Union Jack throw pillows, a photo of Twiggy and a double-decker bus, and a swanky London-like bar with a 60-page drinks menu (though the restaurant serves Italian fare).

There's nothing like the mention of a city's tallest building to get us excited about potentially great hotel room views and in northern Germany the 120-meter Radisson SAS Hotel Hamburg is the tallest kid on the block. What's more, it's about to get a very extensive makeover--the year long renovations are set to cost €45 million (US$65m).

A Hip Hostel for Hamburg?

Our inbox just brought word of a recently opened hotel/hostel/lounge in Hamburg, Germany, and we must say that staying in a hostal has never looked like so much fun.

The place is called Superbude, a name we find ourselves partial to for no other reason than that it reminds us of the hilarious "Superbad." Rooms, priced from about $90, come with up to four beds and are spread across six different colored floors. Guests get to choose whether they want to stay on the brown, grey, red, pink, green or blue level.

Amenities include in-room TVs, a Wii sports room, an in-house "private cinema," Skype cordless phone rentals and a Kitchen Club, comprised of three fridges full of food for the paid-taking. However, the best part may just be rooms' individual showers. Turn the loo's red light on to turn it into a discoteque: the mirror, your discoball; the showerhead, your mic.

Problem is, the hostal is so new (it opened April 18) it lacks guest reviews. So, if you've recently stayed here, let us know about it, bathroom concert review optional.

Mövenpick Converts a Water Tower in Hamburg

Earlier this year the Mövenpick Hotel Hamburg opened up inside a converted water tower in Sternschanzen Park, near the Hamburg fair grounds. Being a 1910 water tower means that the Hamburg Mövenpick doesn't exactly have the standard shape of a hotel, making it an interesting place to stay from the outside at least.

Inside, there are 226 rooms spread over 17 floors, which the hotel describes as "4-star plus" in quality. Rooms near the top of the tower have great views over the city. The restaurant is in an added two-storey glass building to the south of the main tower to provide room for up to 145 guests at one sitting; there's a large banquet room above it.

A metro station is just a two-minute walk away, although some people suggest the Mövenpick is in a slightly seedy part of town, so take care. Since it opened the majority of its customers have been business travelers but it seems like a unique enough hotel to attract the full range of guests. Average room rates start at around $250 a night.

Eurail Hotel Stop: Hamburg's Hotel Terminus Near the Terminal

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: Steindamm 5, Hamburg, Germany, 20099

If you catch the full name of this hotel in northern Germany's fantastic harbour city, Hamburg, you'll see that it's called the Hotel Terminus am Hbf.: a German abbreviation for at the main train station. That makes it our pick for a convenient and not-budget-breaking Eurail stop in Hamburg. It's not too fancy, but it is literally less than two minutes' walk from the main Hamburg station, without being noisily right on top of it. It's also not far from the harbor and very convenient for the department stores and main downtown shopping area of Hamburg, which definitely comes recommended.

So while he Hotel Terminus is not fancy, it's very reasonable: prices for double rooms range from 66 to 99 Euros ($90 - $135), and you can also get a four-bed suite for a maximum of 140 Euros ($190) a night on weekends. Pick your room carefully - you can get help by checking the quaint English translations on their room description page, including these gems:

The most frequently room that are chosed by our guests is the doubleroom ... [Triple room]: This kind of room is good for a nuclear family, but also for adolescents or for guests who want to spent money.

The extra bonus is a good German buffet breakfast is included in all room prices, whether you're a guest who wants to spend money or not.

Jetta Of Hotels, Now With Cute Concierges?

Go To The Hotel's Web

February 23, 2005 at 2:25 PM | by markj | 0 Comments

We have told you about the 25 Hours Hotel in Hamburg, Germany before, but now, it appears that 25 Hours is headed for a coveted "destination hotel" distinction.

Why you ask?

Well, the March National Geographic Traveler taught us the following:

  • Everything in your hotel room is for sale,
    including the Brionvega TV
  • The hotel has an in-house sushi bar
  • "Cute Concierges" will pack you a to go bag before you leave for a day of sight seeing

Ok, so let us get this straight. This place has community movie night (on flat screen televisions), let's you souvenir shop in your hotel room, serves sushi, and comes with potentially hot concierges? Might not be for everyone, but we say, what's not to like?

Of course, we are in the midst of trying to track down a photo of these "cute concierges"--with fact checking journalism being the rave and all.

Slick design, rumored discounts for hipsters under 26, 65 individually designed rooms, and free broadband Internet in the rooms, make 25hours hotel, one of the most talked about properties in Germany.

The Germans seem to be big on not making you feel alone while you are away from home, so with that mantra in mind 25hours created "movie nights".

Yup, every night on the 3rd floor the hotel shows movies on their plasma TV for all guests to enjoy.

Cool feature.  However, even better is that all this comes at a relative bargain.  For a single the going rate is 99 Euros.  According to the hotel's website:

"Affordable style was our motto when building our new hotel.  We think that beautiful things don't have to be expensive."

Hmm.  Someone better let Apple know about this German epiphany.
