West of Melbourne, you get to a major port city called Geelong, most famous for its Australian Rules football club, but also a nice place to visit. The Flag Inn Sundowner Geelong has recently been taken over and totally renovated, and is now called the Chifley on the Esplanade Geelong. Reviewers from The Age checked out the new version recently and gave this report:

Our room is sensational - comfortable, chic, with a great view over the bay and without the stiff, sanitised feel of some chain hotel rooms. Renovations finished a month ago, transforming a daggy motel into a very pleasant four-star hotel.

Located directly on Corio Bay, some of the rooms have excellent views over the water and some to the pool; there are also some one and two-bedroom self-contained apartments in the mix.

Be aware, though, that apparently not all of the rooms have been renovated yet--ask for a new one, and best with a spa, to get the ideal stay in Geelong. Chifley keeps expanding across Australia so there might be more to come yet.
