World's First Sand Hotel is a Giant Sandcastle You Can Sleep In

July 23, 2008 at 2:38 PM | by Jenna | 0 Comments

Today in TOTALLY AWESOME hotel news: someone built a hotel out of sand!

For £10 (about 20 bucks) a night, guests can sleep in a gigantic sandcastle in the UK from now until, uh...well, until it gets washed away.

On Weymouth beach in Dorset, four very ambitious sculptors took seven days and 1,000 tons of sand to create the sand hotel, which is (obviously) roofless, toiletless, and showerless.

But! The hotel offers a twin and double bedroom (the beds are made out of sand, people, let's not get too excited), and adventurous guests can wake up to the ocean when "tide laps through the door."

The sand hotel, orchestrated as a publicity thing by a hotel company, is the biggest sand structure ever built in the UK and BBC News has a cute little video tour of the place here.

Lesson Three in Understanding the English: not only do we love trains, antiques, animals and eccentric pubs, we go crazy over seaside holidays.

Blackpool if we've got kids, Bournemouth if we're over 60, Butlins if the weather's being English and we want to stay indoors and pretend we're at the seaside.

The sazzy HotelChatter choice of English seaside hotels is the Captain's Club Hotel in the teensy south coast town of Christchurch, Dorset.
