Vacationing in Brazil always seems a fabulous idea. It's beautiful, the food is great, the people are fun, and the weather is perfect. But if you happen to be vacationing in Brazil during the World Cup, then you are in for a roller coaster ride.

First, depending on how the team does today should determine whether or not you hit the bar scene (win yes, lose, hell no). Secondly, don't expect much from your hotel on game days-- Brazilians don't exactly favor anything over the game.

The Crowne Plaza in the southern city of Curitiba has enough to amuse you if the staff is MIA. The five-star boutique hotel has a spa, fitness room, pool, sauna, and all that. Each room also has a DVD player, cable TV, free internet, and a mini-bar (ration the food in case grocery stores remain closed for long periods).

Finally, the Crowne Plaza is right in the city center and in walking distance of a mall. So if you are staying here you can probably survive without the "24 hour service" of the hotel, which most likely says somewhere in fine print: "except on game days".

Guests should also follow an unspoken rule and wear yellow and green at all times. Forget the urge to dress up based on the classy look of the hotel lobby and restaurant and opt for full-Brazilian wear at all times. It's your last hope in getting help if you're able to find a hotel worker.
