A Castle in Cassis

Featured as Travel + Leisure's Inn of the Month, the Chateau de Cassis outside Provence is a pricey stay. Double rooms start at $475 and the "rigorously edited furnishings are a breezy cocktail of high and low" which include striking four-poster beds and woven-plastic floor mats. Perhaps this is the origin of shabby chic.
But the inn's history is authentic, being several hundred-years-old (it was originally a castle that dated back to Roman presence in the area) and once visited by Napolean Bonaparte.
The location of the inn is also unbeatable, high on a mountaintop overlooking the Mediterranean. Yet, if you aren't a brick lover the public areas are completely fashioned from old castle bricks.
