[Publisher's Note: Recently, blogger Umi visited a group of hotels in Japan, including the Fujiya and other Japanese Hotels.  Here is what she thought about the Fujiya.  Take it away Umi.]

Fujiya Hotel Hakone Cost: approximately $400-$600
Location: Hakone
Type: Luxury Onsen (hot spring) Resort (Western style with Japanese rooms)

Man, this hotel is gorgeous. It's really old (built in 1878), but beautifully maintained. The gardens on the property are unbelievable (check out the koi in the ponds, they're the biggest I have ever seen). The rooms are lovely and fairly large. The onsen is very nice. This is the kind of place you do not want to go if you want nightlife. The hotel was full of old Japanese people (it's a Japanese dream to have a vacation at a place like Fujiya), everything closes at about 5 PM, and there is absolutely nothing in the way of restaurants and such. If you want a nice relaxing break from Tokyo before you go home, you go to Fujiya. While you are there, take the time to enjoy nature in all her resplendent glory. A word to the wise: Unless you have endless funds, avoid the hotel's Japanese-style dinner (it costs $80-$100 per person and consists almost entirely of seafood). Though I'm sure it's wonderful, you can probably get an equally good traditional Japanese meal elsewhere for far less if you are interested. We ate curry at this little curry shop a few minutes away from the hotel (it's owned by a very nice elderly couple and it's goooood). I highly recommend Fujiya for a nice relaxing few days, but would not suggest you spend more than that amount of time there because you will become chronically bored if you do. We stayed here thanks to JALPak, I'm not sure how much money they saved us (but I assume it was a fair amount).
